Do you have a problem with it being a near-copy, or that a painting clearly not of an Australian landscape (per se) won a prize for Best Australian Landscape? I can understand the second but I have no problem with the first.
I think that a reproduction of a European landscape has no place in an Australian landscape competition. It's just sheer idiocy!
I think his concept of making the painting more "modern" was poorley executed and unimaginative, and the prize should have gone to a more creative work. He got $25,000.00 for reproducing a pre-existing painting without barely changing a thing. He took out the cows, added some stars and other little details, but it is in proportion and concept, nearly the exact same painting.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against taking art or well known image and changing it a wee bit to express an idea. Heck, I love pop art. And I've done it myself on numerous occasions! This was just so... Lame. And the bastard got $25,000.00 for it.
As a fellow artist, it just shits me to see other artists get over looked for such a mundane idea.
Sounds like more of a criticism of the gallery and its panel of art critics than the artist, really. It's not like he was concealing his 'inspiration'.
