Air conditioning wouldn't be so necessary if we'd build our new houses a bit more intelligently - without thin walls, no eaves and giant walls of glass facing the north.
My current house has thin walls, but the insulation seems decent, you get the problem of it being a trifle chilly through most of spring and autumn.
Aircon's a nice option sometimes, but we have to pay for the real cost of the energy it uses and realise that it's coming from burning coal and gas. We need that (relatively) cheap energy and plenty more, but there's better ways of getting it.
Same goes for aircons in the car - a temporary lifesaver, but if you leave it running, it's coming straight from the fuel budget.
