I had a conversation recently about the difference between "complacence" and "acceptance." The biggest difference, it seems to me, is that acceptance is an active thing and complacence is passive. I would venture to say that the emotions you see all around you and in yourself are a means to that particular active end, especially when taking into consideration the people you affiliate yourself with. The whole is greater than the sum of all parts, yes, but you can't cook a meal without first having the proper ingredients.
