Pretty Much Baffled

I can't quite figure it out.  I enjoy writing.  Most of the time, those who read what I write tell me I have a talent for it.  Yet the whole "paragraph a day" challenge fell horribly flat.  I'll write one or two sentence updates for Facebook a few times a day, but I had neglected Moriah's Care Page (MoriahHope with no space, if you hadn't ever been ( Read more... )

The 'what you know' list seems hardly boring! There are successful blogs out there based on just being a mom, and nothing more.

Someone (I wish I could remember who) once said "Write what you WANT to know." I think that's a more interesting idea, really.

I don't write nearly as often as I was for a while, either, but I know I'll pick it back up again. It's true that there aren't a lot of original ideas out there anymore...but it's possible to present an "old" idea in an original way, I think.

Here's the thing about your "things I know" list - all of the things you know, I do not know. That's why it is interesting. You have a wealth of information and experience that is unique to you.

I think that the trick is just writing until you get past that. You write, unintentionally parodying authors you've read, until you look back over something and see a totally new sentence. Maybe it's not going to win any awards, but it's yours -- something original, something specific to you. That's where you find your voice. You already write well, so really, it's just a matter of volume, of writing until you come up with the first line you're happy with. Once you've got the first one, the rest seem to follow quickly.
