Why you need to be on Facebook to help Kris and TVOL
a quick and dirty quide to facebook
If you're anything like me, you don't really use Facebook much. You might have one connected to a lot of family and friends (and old acquaintances from elementary school) and really have no desire to flood their Facebook feeds with a ton of Kris Allen stuff. I mean, Kris is awesome and all, but your aunt might not appreciate 10 million Kris messages in a row (she SHOULD, but...).
The problem is, having and using a Facebook is a necessity if you're trying to be a good Kris fan on the internet. Social networking is where it's at. Gone are the days when you sign up with individual accounts at each website. These days, they want to invade your privacy completely and follow you around the internet with your social media accounts (primarily Facebook and Twitter).
Radio stations (most importantly), MTV, VH1, and practically ALL the other sites that write about Kris and his music use Facebook as a tool to determine viewer and listener interest in an artist. Webiste hits are great, but it's even BETTER when you like and comment on an article. They LOVE that. The more interest they have, the more likely they are to write about Kris in the future.
What You Need to Do:
1) Set up a Facebook account. You might already have one that you don't mind using (maybe your aunt loves Kris, too! Good for her!), but if you don't, you'll need to go to
Facebook.com and set up an account. If you don't want to use your real life personal account, feel free to make up a fandom account! Just register using a fake name and information - it's easy!
2) Once you've set up your account, start "Like"-ing and commenting on articles. I recommend you stay logged in to your Facebook, so this will be super-easy. It's just one click to "Like" an article. Feel free to click the "Tweet" button while you're there (this will send a link to the article to your Twitter followers).
Let's look at this Just Jared article for an example:
See the "Like"? Click on that. And you're done!
Jared also has a Facebook "Share" button a little further down (not all articles will have this). It's worth clicking on this, too. This means you'll share the link with your Facebook friends. Another window will pop up (as pictured below) where you can even write a little something (or chose not to) like "Hey, this is really cool!!!" or whatever.
Here's another example of the "Like" button, this time on The Hollywood Reporter website:
Also, sometimes there is a "Recommend" button instead of a "Like" button. This is similar to the "Share" button above as it lets you post the link to your Facebook friends:
Also worth noting, sometimes voting in polls is done through Facebook (like the VH1 Countdown), so a Facebook is worth having for that alone. Similarly, when you vote in some radio song polls (like the UMix It green arrow clicky thing from that Chicago radio station) your vote counts TWICE as much if you're logged into Facebook.
3) Communicate ON Facebook. So far we've just talked about using Facebook to Like articles on other websites. But Facebook is an entity all by itself! Chances are your local radio station(s) will have a Facebook and will use it extensively. They LOVE it when listeners interact with them! You can easily find your station's Facebook page by going to their regular webpage and clicking on the link to their Facebook.
Once you're there, you can do a lot. 1) "Like" them. 2) Comment on their wall. Many stations will take song requests this way. You can also post interesting info about Kris (e.g. his Idol performance) - BUT - use your discretion here. If it looks like ONLY the radio station is making posts, they may not like posts from listeners. It depends on the station. 3) Like/comment on the posts the radio station makes. Some radio stations use Facebook for those "Smash or Trash" song contests, so you'll need to comment to vote on those.
Too long; didn't read? Short summary time!
Get a Facebook to help support Kris. It's easy and not scary. Radio stations and media outlets use it extensively. "Like" articles, etc about Kris. POST/comment on your local radio station's Facebook about Kris. If you have a lot of Facebook friends and feel comfortable, post on your own wall about exciting things Kris is doing.
And that's it! Easy-peasy! You can use your Facebook as much or as little as you want to. Just "Like" articles (it takes literally one second) or write extensive essays about Kris's muscular arms music on your wall! It's up to you, and it's all supporting Kris. :)
