My computer, and my housemate's computer, AND my friend's computer are all totally fucked at the mo too. And all in the same way! There is SO a virus going around, despite what my AV tells me. Stupid Anti-Virus useless crap!!

If you have any luck fixing your computer without wiping its mind, please let me know what you do. *has three essays due in a week*

I bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows - it was long overdue, and I had a shiny new HDD to install onto, so it wasn't too much of a drama. Not sure if my problems were virus related, though, as the three symptoms were
  1. Adobe Acrobat Reader hung whenever it was executed
  2. My CD-RW wasn't being recognised
  3. Firefox hung the entire system when executed
The last part makes me think that it might have been an evil Microsoft virus designed to make people use IE, but now that I've reinstalled everything is fine *knocks on wood*.

So, sorry but it looks like I can't help... except to say that a reformat apparently solves the problem :)

Good luck with your essays!

Oh well, that's a shame. It's obviously not the same problem. But kinda funny that all of our computers died at around the same time. Ours won't even start up Windows anymore!! You can do safe-mode, but there's no CD driver installed, annoyingly... and I never got around to making a boot disk. :(

So even if I reformatted the whole thing, I wouldn't be able to install Windows from the CD, because the MSCDEX driver is on the non-existent boot disk....

Fuck!

Well, I'm glad that your computer's back on track at least... now to get around to fixing these ones here.

I'm writing from the one remaining functioning computer in the household, an XP laptop, which helpfully is sans floppy drive. Grah!!

Anyway, for these essays I may have to resort to (God forbid) using a pen and a piece of that whaddyacallit... ;)

I was fortunate in that I dual boot my computer, so my win98 install still worked, and I could reinstall win2k from there. I must admit I tend to be a bit lax about boot disks too :(

Aren't windows cds bootable these days? My win2k one is, or at least it says so... maybe you can boot using the cd?
