It is all the buzz these days about how Joss Whedon's Avengers is on track to be the third-biggest movie of all time. A certain amount of contrary-minded people are talking about how with 2012 3-D ticket prices, that number is practically meaningless. Can't you just, I dunno, slip over to China for a matinee?

(And a little more seriously, where does Japan stand on the dub-vs-sub question for foreign blockbusters? I can't recall ever encountering a Japanese dub of Buffy or what have you.)

Subtitles are where it's at. I always double-check the theater listings to make sure it says 字幕, and I've not been disappointed yet. And a good thing, too. My Japanese has become okayish, but I'd still miss a helluva lot of nuance if I had to put up with dubbing.

Wow. And y'know, a fair number of those movies came out before the VCR. (Or at least before the VCR was popular.) That means that more people want to see The Avengers right now than, at the time, wanted to see Lawrence of Arabia ever.
