It was 1987 - Full Metal Jacket was just out, following Platoon last year. Clearly America loved grim, unflinching looks back at the US involvement in Vietnam.
It was 1987 - The A Team had just finished its run with its characters, "hunted by the government for a crime they did not commit", finally being cleared of robbing the Bank of Saigon.

Look! It found its audience, that hallowed group who could transcend the partisan divide and appreciate its half-ness for what it was. (Total size of this demographic: one person. Even worse: he's the sort who posts comments on YouTube.)

I did not, but I picture the singer as some kind of horrifying, scowly, giant-lipped monster-man whose visage would send small children shrieking in terror. With any luck, he was locked away decades ago.
