That's a pretty clear display of the gap between any artist worthy of the name and me. I've seen this sort of thing many times, and I'm still no closer to being able to do it.

I was surprised by two details:

First, the entire painting was done at 100% scale; he never once zoomed in. I spend 90% of my MS Paint time zoomed in as far as I can go, so my clumsy, clay-like hands can clobber the pixel I want.

Second, he had no problem wrecking bits of the image only to clean them up later. How many times did the hair get a swathe of face or background slopped over it, only to be repaired again later? I suppose if you have the confidence to embark on this project in the first place, you have no doubt you can touch up a bit of hair later. I Control-Z the instant something lands out of place, because I don't believe I'll get any of it right a second time.

Having noticed these, perhaps I am closer to artistry than I was. But that feels like saying “I noticed the UFC champ didn't flop all over the ground after getting punched in the ( ... )
