I need a van. I am looking at 2nd hand vans. Who knows of this bizarre world, and can nevigate me through it by maybe coming to see vans with me?

My only advice: don't buy a Transit van for £350 off ebay and then name it Death Machine. It is a story that cannot end well...

My understanding of the matter is it should be black with a red stripe down it.

Do not stress yourself about this, my son. It soon will be, even if it is not at first.

2nd hand vans.

I would insist on a full service history at the very least. Check what it has been previously used for and for how long it's been doing it.

Make sure you see it in person and take it for a test drive.
Get the current owner to also drive it as well as you may get an idea of their driving style - i.e. whether they're hard on the clutch/thrash it/generally drive like a loon.
Also, check emmissions as well.

Of course, you could just pay the RAC/AA/Green Flag to come and have a look for you. Yeah, it costs money but not nearly as much as if you buy a lemon.

I have to say I don't know a great deal about buying 2nd-hand vans, except to say to treat them as you would a 2nd hand car - i.e. do your homework and check the vehicle out thoroughly before parting with cash, although unlike cars, don't be too worried about high mileages (in fact, be cautious of a suspiciously low mileage). Don't buy ex-Police vans. They're low mileage, but they'll have been thrashed to within an inch of their lives. Ex-Royal Mail vans are allegedly quite good though - higher than average mileage but not driven particularly hard.

From experience Ford Transits are the best and seem to last forever (I saw an immaculate Mk1 on the North Circular the other week). Also, being popular, spares are cheap. They're also the most car-like to drive.

And yeah, what Dug said ;-)
