Got a junkyard distributor from an old VW Fox, this morning, on my way to work. (Thank goodness for VW/Audi parts-bin engineering.) Going to slot it into the '89 Cabriolet tomorrow and see if it runs better. If not I'm perilously close to running out of ideas.

Well it helps that the majority of VWs from 1984-1991 used the same engine.

One of these days, if I ever got into autocrossing with the Fox for example, I wanted to get the distributor and assembly for a knock sensor from an 8v Golf/Jetta. Apparently it all just swaps in place.

Yeah, I think that's right. One of the things about CIS and CIS-E is the ignition and fuel injection are entirely independent.

The guy at the parts counter was surprised to learn that Cabriolets were still using non-knock-sensor ignition with a vacuum can on the distributor in '89. They actually stuck with it until the transition to Digifant, which came really late on that model line.
