Decided to change the oil cooler seal on the '88 Cabriolet. This was purely preventative, but I had one fail catastrophically on my '89, and it was extremely unpleasant. All the oil dumped out onto the road in, I'd estimate, less than two miles. Ruined my whole morning ( Read more... )

Back in the mid-to-late 2000s at work we had a late 80s/early 90s Mercedez Benz come through in the hot summer and he blew a coolant hose on the dyno. It split lengthwise and looked so old and worn that I had to wonder if that was the factory one or not.

Could very well be. I think the three-way oil cooler hose on the VW was original. At very least it was an OEM replacement, and the OEM replacements are so expensive almost no one uses them. The Mahle aftermarket ones look different.

There are also certain Mercedes diesel engines from that era that are prone to cracked cylinder heads, and they can blow hoses if the cooling system gets enough pressure in it from combustion gases.

Up
