About two days ago I noticed the Del Sol had started making an odd, chattery, rattling sound at certain speeds and throttle settings. It was intermittent, and the sort of thing you really couldn't hear well unless the stereo was off. I couldn't duplicate it by revving the engine in neutral. Nope. I had it happen on a VW once, too, oddly enough. I figure it probably didn't get tightened properly when the last timing belt job was done, and probably slowly worked loose over time due to engine vibration. It's a large bolt with a lot of threads on it so it would take a while to back out far enough to cause problems.

Thanks for mentioning the water pump. I should totally do that when I do my timing belt!

It adds another $60 or so in parts costs, but it seems worth it to be able to go another 90K without having to worry about it, given the amount of disassembly it takes to get in there.
