Feel free to post here comments or critics about my characterisation of Ioryogi.
Comments screened.

Series: Kobato
Character: Ioryogi

Despite the fact he possesses the appearance an harmless dog plushie, Ioryogi is far from being as soft as he looks. He’s rough mannered, foul mouthed and grumpy the most part of the time. Ioryogi can be arrogant and belligerent.

Ioryogi’s role is to guide Kobato and give her advices. Kobato being naïve and innocent he’s often forced to bring her down back to earth (more or less roughly) when her too optimistic nature is playing her tricks.

He’s short tempered and he is easily irked by Kobato’s clumsiness. He doesn’t hesitate to yell at her, call her stupid or even hit her when she does mistakes but deep down inside he cares a lot about her and protects her.

In the manga, he only talks and moves in front of Kobato. In front of the others he feigns being a toy. Sometimes he has a hard time remaining immobile, especially when Kobato’s doing something stupid.

Background:

Little is known about Ioryogi’s past, we only know that he changed of name and of form and that he used to be powerful . Ioryogi is still quite strong actually. It seems that he was turned into a stuffed toy because he caused some ruckus. His manners let us think that he he was far from being a good person. It also seems that if Kobato successes in her task, he’ll be able to take back his old appearance which is , apparently the one of a monstrous black flame-hound.

Hanato Kobato has a wish and to have it granted she has to do something in exchange. At the beginning of the manga, Ioryogi gives her a succession of missions in order to see if she’ll be able to fulfil her task. Once she passed his tests he gave her a bottle and her mission’s goal; filling that bottle with wounded hearts. Each time Kobato heals a heart by bringing happiness to someone or soothing a soul it appears into the bottle under the form of a little shiny coloured drop.

At the beginning, Kobato had no clues about how filling the bottle and randomly started to ask people if she could “heal their hearts”, ending up scaring them. She finally started to work at Yomogi nursery in order to help Sayaka, an indebted preschool headmistress.

One day the yakuzas showed up at the kindergarten. As Kobato tried to protect the kids, one grabbed her by the hair and she dropped Ioryogi. There was a short fight where Ioryogi bit one of the Yakuza’s ankles while no one was looking at him. The yakuzas kept phoning the school, threatening Sayaka, wanting her to close it.

Ioryogi followed Kobato everywhere, either hidden into her bag or playing the stuffed toy in front of the headmistress and her assistant. As no one was paying attention to him, he could gather information about what was happening in Yomogi nursery.

Sayaka and the kids from the school became really important to Kobato so she decided to help them no matter what.
Wanting to know a bit more about Sayaka’s problems, Ioryogi contacted an old acquaintance, or rather an old unfortunate partner in crime, to find some data for him.

When he came back he received some new information about Kobato’s mission. From now on she has a time limit to fulfil her task If within 6 months she doesn’t fills her bottle, her wish won’t be granted.

Abilities/Additional Notes :

Ioryogi can fire fireballs from his mouth he’s also quite good at fighting despite his soft and fluffy body. At first he’ll feign being a toy in front of strangers but he’ll break that taboo later.
