summary: there are eleven inches between them.
notes: thanks to sioniann for looking this over!

Buchou is ridiculously tall.

Ryoma can remember the first time he saw him, standing strong and tall, looking so unflappable and mature that Ryoma was sure he was a teacher, or at least some misplaced high school student.

He grew increasingly fascinated by buchou over the year, watching him on the other side of the net, his amazement growing more and more with every graceful return, every perfectly arcing volley that pushed Ryoma higher and higher, beyond even his own conceptions of what tennis could be like.

Even off the court, buchou shattered all of Ryoma's expectations. When he pulled Ryoma behind the clubroom and kissed him, hard and desperate and intense, after they'd played a match (Ryoma didn't remember if he'd won or buchou had; it didn't matter anymore), Ryoma was shocked at first, freezing up for a second, then quickly melting into the kiss. Ryoma had expected kissing to be wet, messy, and gross; he'd never looked forward to having to deal with a swooning girl, pliant and weak in response to a touch; it seemed so unequal. Kissing buchou was nothing like he'd imagined a girl would be like. Buchou held onto Ryoma's arm with a strong hand, squeezing so hard that Ryoma had to squirm out of it, fearing for his circulation, grabbing a handful of buchou's shirt and trying to fit their bodies together because if they weren't touching as much as possible, Ryoma suddenly knew, he would die.

Ryoma always pouted when buchou bent to kiss him on the top of his head, or bent to kiss him at all. He minded a little less when he lifted Ryoma up, but only because that put them into perfect positions to mold to one another, and Ryoma liked that more than he liked his pride. Normally, though, he hated being reminded of the eleven inches between them. It made him feel tiny and immature, like a child, and Ryoma did not think of himself as a child.

Buchou is ridiculously tall, and Ryoma refuses to admit to being ridiculously short. Instead, when he feels particularly diminuitive, he challenges buchou to a match, and everything is perfectly equal again.
