title: Everything Looks Perfect From Far Away
pairing: Tezuka/Ryoma
words: 330
rating: PG
summary: Futurefic. Ryoma hates reporters.
notes: Thanks to sparklespiff for helping me make this presentable. Title from Such Great Heights by The Postal Service.

The American reporters call them by their first names, and Ryoma, who was a bit more prepared for the culture shock, still has to stifle a gasp the first time he hears, "So, Kunimitsu, do you think you're prepared for your match against Federer?"

Ryoma interrupts, and tries to politely explain to the reporter, a perky blonde his father would say is "cute", that she's made an error, is implying undue familiarity, and she just smiles wider and say "Oh, we're all friends here, right, Ryoma?"

Ryoma scowls and doesn't say anything for the rest of the interview.

--

Ryoma's publicist (soon to become their publicist) thinks it's cute that they've known each other for so long, and after learning this always puts them into interviews together. Ryoma always sighs and rolls his eyes, and then pulls his cap down to hide the happiness he knows Tezuka can see in his face.

--

Ryoma is offered a sponsorship deal from Fanta, and he accepts on the condition that he only be in commercials for the grape flavor. They agree, and give him several cases to seal the deal. Tezuka shakes his head because he knows that now there won't be room for anything else in the refrigerator. (Ryoma, it turns out, had thought ahead and bought a separate Ponta cooler.)

Ryoma still calls it "Ponta", even when the Americans in suits and ties try to pay him not to.

--

The reporters start to ask them questions about relationships, eventually. Tezuka shoots them a slightly out of practice buchou-glare and says they're both focusing on the opponents at hand, and Ryoma fidgets, pulls his cap down, frowns.

(Later, in their apartment, he presses his lips to Tezuka's jaw, neck, collarbones, and whispers "why?"

Tezuka sighs, and looks to the headlines in the newspaper. Two men found dead behind abandoned wearhouse. "We can't get careless.")

--

Most of the time, Ryoma likes keeping secrets from the press. Anyway, he thinks, they wouldn't understand if he told them he was in love with a pillar.
