Who: Lee and Tenten
What: Lee and Tenten kick each other's butts in basketball
Where: Oshima High indoor basketball court :D
Warnings: none <3

The right edge of Lee's lips turned up in a sharp smirk as he surveyed his opponent.  She was quick; clever; resourceful; able to shoot a hundred baskets in one bound, etc etc.  Lee held the highest esteem for her.

But that didn't mean he wasn't going to grind her into the dust.  (In the nicest possible way.)

"Ready, Tenten?" he teased, bouncing the basketball back and forth between his hands.

A sly smile crossed her face, as her almond oculars eyed Lee keenly.  "I've been ready since the moment the idea came up," she said confidently.  She stood two feet apart, knees bent and arms out to her sides.  "Now are you ready to lose?"  A mischievous glint twinkled in her eyes.

Lee's answering grin reflected Tenten's mischievousness - plus one.  (He was a little competitive when it came to challenges.)  "You should be asking yourself that question."

A blur as Lee shot forward, dribbling the ball with his right hand, but it was just a feint, an attempt to trick Tenten; he bounced it through his legs as he neared her, switching to his left, his movements fleet and unfaltering.

Somehow his feint fooled her.  Embarrassing, especially for so early in the game.  Jerking her head sharply in self-admonition, she motioned to his left.  She followed him, like a snake after a mouse.

Swerving to the right, she ran face front before him in her bow-legged stance.  She scuttled a few steps backward to stabilize herself, then slapped at the ball bouncing between the floor and Lee's palm.

Tenten and her fantastic aim - but that was what made playing one-on-one with her interesting.  Lee saw her coming but was unable to stop her from slapping the ball away; he wasn't about to let his chance to score escape, though, especially after successfully tricking her.

His left hand caught the ball as it bounced back up again; blocking Tenten with the side of his body and right arm, he put on a burst of speed, imagining the track field, and carried the ball over to the side of the hoop.

Tch, the boy was fast, Tenten would give him that.  She dashed for the hoop, her sneakers pounding and the soles screeching with every step.  She leaped to the backboard with an outstretched arm to block the shot.

First point to me! Lee thought happily, launching the ball upwards -

- only to have it slapped away.  Lee's eyes widened; in his eagerness, he'd neglected to watch out for Tenten.  He would not be defeated though; no he would not!

As soon as he landed from his jump, he leapt sideways, trying to secure the ball before Tenten could.

As the orange sphere fell away from the hoop, Tenten grabbed it from the air and landed neatly.  She made for the other side of the court and glanced at Lee over her shoulder.  She dribbled the ball with her right hand, and as the hoop came closer to view she sped up.  The ball tapped the floor and bounced into her left hand.  She jumped to the side of the net and threw it up for a layup.

Lee jumped with Tenten, keeping up with her nearly toe to toe; in an act of desperation, he raised his left arm to block the sphere from getting through.  Yes!! - the tip of his finger brushed the surface, tilting the ball off-balance.  It spun in the air, hit the rim, and bounced away.  Lee flashed a triumphant grin as he caught it again, wasting no time in running back to Tenten's hoop with it.

The sophomore girl sucked her teeth indignantly as he recaptured possession.  Too much time was wasted on the layup.  A power dunk through the hoop would have secured her the first two points, but it was too late to ponder her mistakes.  With lunging strides she trailed her opponent, running mere steps behind him.  Her feet stamped his previous footsteps as her arms swung around to hit the ball her direction, but her hand slipped centimeters shy of the orange rubber.  The pace she maintained faltered when her arm flung backward and threw off her balance.  Swiftly she reclaimed her footing, but it appeared Lee already gained substantial distance.

A short glance behind as he ran informed Lee of the slight advantage he'd obtained.  Dribbling up to the hoop, he jumped - not high enough to score a slam dunk, but high enough to simply bounce the ball off the headboard, and through the net.

Lee did a triumphant little dance as soon as he touched the court, basketball rolling out of bounds.  "Yahoo! First point to me!" he declared, all grins and shine as he boogied across the floor.

Tenten put her fists to her hips and tilted her head a notch.  "You sure you should be dancing right now?" she asked with daring, a determined smile creeping onto her lips.  "The game's just getting started!"  She stepped out of bounds to retrieve the ball.  Slowly dribbling the rubber beside her, the girl then darted past the boy mid-boogie and made for his side of the court.  She flashed him a grin as she raced to the hoop.

What the - "Hey, that was a very underhanded move!" he cried half-heartedly, speeding after her; by now, though, it would take a few seconds to catch up.

"You're not whining, are you?" she teased, topping it off with a cute wink.  Lee was quick, though.  Even with her headstart, he could probably gain on her.  She was two-thirds to the hoop; he still had time.  A showy spin-around taunt challenged him to catch up before she resumed her regular dribbling and jumped to the rim.

"I'm not whining; I just didn't expect you to be so dishonorable," Lee called jokingly.  He reached her just as she jumped - that little taunt had cost her time - and leapt right afterwards, swiping at the ball again, but it was too late; the rubber sphere sailed mockingly through the hoop.

He landed with a grin, launching himself after the ball.  "That was good, Tenten, but I will show you that cheaters never prosper!"

Admittedly, the move was cheap, but she followed through it to teasingly coax Lee to get serious, if his post-point boogie woogie said anything about his in-game attitude.  She resolved not to pull such a trick again.  She lived for competition, the thrill of player versus player, but Tenten prided herself for not being a cheater.  She played seriously and wanted to win fairly, and expected of her opponents the same.

"Then show me!" she called him out.  The girl pushed off after Lee, sight fixed intently on the ball, his body ((ooc:  Oooh.  J/k.  XP)), and his movements.  Her head and torso mimicked his movements, and her hands and fingers splayed at the ready to reclaim the ball at the given signal.

Lee flashed a grin behind him as he hurtled back to Tenten's hoop.  "As you wish!"

An hour or so later, when the both of them were a little tired (well, actually, only Tenten was tired, because Lee certainly was not, he could go on for four hours more, he just needed something to restore the fluids in his body), the game ended with a tie; Lee sat on the bench where his gym bag rested, snickering as he rooted through it for an energy drink.  "What was that little twirl when you jumped at the end?  I like it, but it's hardly professional."  He pulled the bottle out and offered it to her.

She took it and unscrewed the cap, nodding a thanks before guzzling some liquid down.  "Just a tease, Lee.  I'm not always so theatrical.  I'm more about playing hard and less about showing off," she explained with a tinge of remorse.  Hardly professional: the statement stung.  "I won't be so classless next time.  But it did look kind of cool at least, did it?"

"It looked adorable, Tenten," Lee continued teasing, oblivious to the slight hurt his words had caused her.  He would have been groveling for forgiveness otherwise.  Lee took out another bottle - strawberry-flavored! - took off the top, and drank it down with gusto.

"I don't know about that," she said lightly.  A sprinkle of light pink dotted the bridge of her nose.  She downed some more liquid energy and placed the bottle next to her outer hip.  Turning to the boy, she said wholeheartedly, "Good game, Lee, good game."

"You too, Tenten," Lee agreed, screwing the cap back on.  He grinned.  "I think we're in pretty good shape for the season this year, don't you?"

Tenten erupted in an amused laughter.  "We sure are.  It'll be fun."  Until someone figured her out, and had the girl kicked off the team.  But that wasn't going to happen.

Lee stood up, shouldered his pack, and turned to smile at her.  "It's getting a little dark out.  Do you live near here, or do you take the boat?"

"Nearby," she replied, "take a left on the street from the school, and another left on the second intersecting street.  Walk three blocks down, and you're there."  Slipping on her own gym bag, she drank the last of the beverage and tossed it into the nearest garbage receptacle.  Two points, she thought.  A hand waving, she said, "See you around, Lee."  The girl started walking towards the door.

Lee sprinted a few steps ahead to open it for her.  "Well, uh.. may I escort you home?" he asked, holding the door back with one arm.

She chuckled, slight derision lacing her tone.  "Come on, I'll be fine.  I walk home all the time, and I'm still here."  Lee was sweet, but she didn't take well to chivalry.  She sometimes misinterpreted it as an insult, like guys thought they had to be extra nice to her because she was a girl.

"Aww, but it'll make me feel better..."  Lee let the door go to walk behind her.  He was sure that Tenten could take care of herself, but it was more proper for a young man to escort a ladyfriend home, wasn't it?

She let out a sigh.  With his energy directed all one way, denying him proved a cumbersome task.  Slowing her pace to match Lee's, she looked at him to her side and said, "Fine, all right, only because you insisted.  Let's get out of here."

Lee grinned, shiny and bright.  "You don't have to look so sad, Tenten!"  And then, his eyes lit up as a remarkable idea suddenly struck him.  "I could race you home instead," he challenged with a wink.

Her hand gripped the strap of her bag.  She answered with a determined smirk.  "Now you're talking."  Showing him a playful wave, she ran away from the gym and bade, "Ciao!"

"You're not getting away just yet!" Lee called, laughing and keeping up with her stride for stride.  His gym bag thumped heavily on his back with every leap, but he barely noticed it.  Lee was on the track team; he wasn't going to lose this one if he could help it.
