GUTS was released in the last months of my grad studies.
I was running out of steam. I was poor as fuck and my savings could only afford that semester. I was working furiously on my thesis seemingly without any concrete result in sight. I was barely able to breathe-and then I still remember it vividly until this day, that night in my small flat back near uni. I decided to take a well deserved break from cramming and watched the PV.
The lines 「答えが間違いでも その勇気があれば 真実はいつだって 。。。人は誰も弱いものさ 泣いてるんだよ」struck so hard, right into the kokoro. It was like being in the worst point of your life-when all you really wanted was to push forward but you were lacking in energy, in spirit, and in anything-and then having Arashi telling you, “It’s okay to make mistake, as long as you have the courage (to try). Everyone is weak, everyone cries (too).”
「まだまだ諦めるな」This part was sung with Arashi standing close to each other, on top of the stairs in the set, staring straight into the camera with large smiles on their faces-and the next thing I know I ended up smiling, with tears running down, disgustingly snorting into my umpteenth tissue of the night, and hit replay, and replay, and replay.
When Arashi sang this song at 65th Kouhaku, I was crying again, this time with gratitude and pride. I finished my study with flying colors, and to hear the song performed at most prestigious shows in Japan, with them smiling silly and かっこいい at the same time! I’m so proud of you, Arashi for working so hard and being there in the place you deserved. I’m so proud of myself for not giving up when I could have picked the easy way out. Look at where you are right now. Look at where I am right now.
I know this sounds cliche. I know your songs are labelled syrupy--they don't call you bubblegum pop for nothing. I know not everyone takes you guys seriously. I know not everyone takes me seriously. You keep on working hard, one step at a time. I sometimes need a breather, but persist in working hard and even if I stumble, it's always one step at a time.
This song was a blessing. This single was a blessing. I enjoyed Yowakutemo even if it's not a favorite, but I am forever grateful that Nino was in this dorama, therefore they can release this amazing song in this single.

I’m looking forward for more suprises, for more special appearances, for amazing concerts that you all have worked so hard for, for all the nostalgia, because I know that if you had a brilliant 15th anniversary already, you all are going to aim higher, better, larger, and more love, for your 20th.
