Sounds like you're doing exactly what you love in regard to the lizard, and it sounds like you're making good progress.

Now, advice on how to talk to someone after making a complete fool out of one's self.... This I have experience in.
Accept that you made a fool of yourself, and get past it as quickly as possible. It's like a band-aid, just rip it off and get it overwith and the pain (and possible humiliation) will be over much more quickly.
