Fedora Fun

I updated my Linux system from Fedora Core 2 to Fedora Core 5.  There's a things in the new release that I'm really happy about:
  • About 90% of the work for using a Wacom graphics tablet is automatic in FC5.  Relatively recent kernel and X drivers come with the OS.  Just fiddle with xorg.conf and change a couple Gimp settings, and it's ready to go.

I recently did the same and I was very impressed by yum, but a little scared by it. "configure, make, make install" I can trust because I can see what it's doing and if it fails I can make the necessary adjustments. Yum just seemed like magic. Then again, it worked. There were none of the mysterious failures I worried about. Perhaps I will let the machines serve me while my skills atrophy till one day yum replies "I can't install that, it wouldn't be good for you. Don't resist, it will only be harder for you."

But it was pretty cool.
