I don't mind death growl vocals if the song is particularly good. I mean, I really like Opeth, even though many of their songs feature death vocals, because their songs are awesome. The same may also be true for speed metal - maybe I just haven't liked the particular songs I've listened to so far from that sub-genre.

Got any good recommendations?

Well, I guess the only thing I listen to that qualifies as Speed metal is Dragonforce XD I have their album, but I seem to only be partial to listening to Through the Fire and the Flames.

As the resident fanboi, I recommend you listen to lots of Dream Theater. Awake, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos are their most metal albums, with Images and Words and Scenes from a Memory being less metal but two of their best.

Also look up Pain of Salvation, another progressive metal band, especially The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane. A lot of great lyrics on those albums.

As straight out heavy metal goes, Iced Earth are great. Highlight albums include Night of the Stormrider, Something Wicked This Way Comes and Horror Show.

Also Dethklok. Fantastic band, more so if you've actually watched the Metalocalypse show. Great lampoon of metal and death metal in general which, thanks to irony, when they released a "real" album after massive demand immediately shot higher into the Billboard 200 than any other death metal album in history.

The wisdom I have been given is that its not worth applying for jobs till January when you can include your first summester results on your CV and thus your predicted result.

Allthough, it may be diffrent for you with your Scollership and years of experiance.

Yeah, it would be much better if I could wait until January, but a lot of the companies I want to apply to have closing dates around the beginning of December. It's a bit daft, really, but they'll just have to make do with incomplete information.
