RAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNTT

Today at work I was putting stuff away and chatting with the new manager, and he asked "So, where are your parents from?" So I told him they were from Folsom. He looked puzzled, so I elucidated: "Yeah, it's a shitty small town up near Sacramento, no one's really heard of it so I'm not surprised you haven't". He said: "Oh, no, no... I mean, like, ( Read more... )

"real feminists are lesbians"

Ahahahahahaheheheheh!

Otherwise, I very vaguely have the opposite problem, with the ethnicity thing. Sometimes people like to talk about their ancestry, and I say that I'm half Maliseet, so Native, and that can lead to people kinda staring and totally not seeing it. I have to guess this is because my ancestry ties into the East Coast, and everyone's used to the mid-continent standard, which is somewhat different. Although according to my sister, when she arrived at University in the middle of Manitoba, everyone automatically knew just from looking at her. So there appear to be layers.

Yeah, I usually laugh at that sort of thing too, except I think the guy actually believes it. Apparently he met a feminist, once, and she was a lesbian. I think I will let my boyfriend's feminist mother deal with this one. :P

That kinda sounds like the problem Maryann was talking about below, just in the sense that people don't believe you when you tell them your ancestry... I can honestly say that's one problem I've never had, although if I really did begin to go around telling people that I'm Scottish it might become an issue, but that's why I don't do it. Although I desperately want to, lol.

That's true, actually.. I guess I'm lucky we're past the stage where all Asians are Chinese now and it's usually phrased as a question for me rather than "OMG NO YOUR CHINESE". Kind of weird when there are more assumptions made about European languages than Asian ones O_o

And Russian? WTF? That's like comparing... well, Chinese and Japanese, lol, but if it weren't for anime everybody would get those mixed up too, so eh, people are stupid?

Ew, creepy... I hate how guys like that are always like "Women have it so good!", and then they totally betray their own point by listing all the things we're "allowed" to do now and showing how much they really hate us that they think this is such a huge privilege (OMG WOMEN VOTE AND DRIVE). There are more people like that than there should be :\

Anyway... what time do you think you'll be done with your appointment on the 7th? I just realized that this women in the arts thing that I'm gonna be in (I get to sell my zines!) runs until that day, so I might hang out there in the morning before you get here, but I have to sign up for a table so I was just curious how long I should tell them I'll be there. :)

Interesting... From looking at other people's comments I think Americans just might have a bad habit of being rude and just plain not believing people when they say what their ethnicity/nationality is. But then again I think we have a weird attitude toward race to begin with. I have to admit I do have that stereotype about Germans, but I don't think I would ever insist that someone isn't really what they say they are, because really, how rude is that?
