Its gotten way better then 20 years ago :P back then it was hard to find vhs tapes that were subtitled. heck even in the early 90s it was hard to find a non-dub vhs tape and they were horrible. At least now they sometimes provide you with uncut versions of the dvd (naruto) these you can go ahead and watch the subtitled version. sadly the good companies cannot afford to get licensing rights for big shows. thats why companies like funimation with their big viacom backings can afford to purchase the more popular shows. In order to maximize their profit they must change the show to fit their key demographics which happens to be kids, lowest common denominator and such. anime distribution is a business after all :P.

all other countries do the same thing, friends show their names are all changed in mexico and are given more latin names. I'm sure japan does the same thing with our shows, giving the characters japanese names and badly dubbing their voices.
