Sunset

I heard the words that you said. Words that played around within my head. Was I only a game to you? Not any special someone, just another thing for you that you would soon forget like all of the ones that were once in your head.
-Who was I

--
People change. People drift away. People…. Fall apart.

Ryeowook stares at the empty couch, brows furrowing at the foreign feeling. Funny, Ryeowook thinks. His heart feels just as empty.

“He can’t be left alone.” The Kyuhyun in Ryeowook’s memories says to a pouting Donghae. “He thinks too much even when with me, who knows when he’d kill himself from over-thinking when I leave him bored.”

Grabbing the remote from the coffee table, Ryeowook drops himself on the couch-too huge, too wide, too spacey for his liking- and switches the television on. He settles on the gag show he somehow manages to stumble on while he flips the channels mindlessly.

When did it start? His mind asks him in a deep domineering voice. Ryeowook focuses on the show, simple jokes seemingly too complicated for him to process, and laughs when the audience laughs. He wants to think he’s fine, and when he finally thinks, his mind says otherwise.

The door to the complex opens and Ryeowook turns his head abruptly it must have hurt. Kyuhyun sees Ryeowook curled up on the couch, on one side of the couch. The smile in Kyuhyun’s face turns resigned and he closes the door quietly. “I leave you alone for a minute, and you’re already thinking about the end of the world.” Kyuhyun sits on his side of the couch and presses a finger on Ryeowook’s forehead, willing the frown away. “What were you thinking?”

“Nothing, just…. It must be nice, the end of the world. We’d die together, and the sun will still rise tomorrow.” Ryeowook mumbles, a small smile slowly forming.

Kyuhyun laughs, deep and echoing inside Ryeowook’s mind. “Except that it doesn’t really shine. It’s just there.”

“You think it’s the earth that rises and sets?” An eyebrow cocks, Ryeowook gives him an amused smile.

Returning the smile, Kyuhyun stands and trudges towards his room. He stops when his fingers touch the cold metal of the knob. “No, not really. Just that the sun doesn’t move. And even when the earth falls apart, the sun wouldn’t care.” He waves a lazy hand at Ryeowook before entering his room.

Ryeowook stares at the closed door on the other side of the room, his hand ghosts over the empty space of the couch. Normally Kyuhyun would be snatching the remote from Ryeowook’s hands and searches for a sappy chick flick movie. Ryeowook throws the remote down the floor instead.

The soft thud of the door closing sounds eerily loud in Ryeowook’s ears.
--

When did it start? Ryeowook’s mind asks and he doesn’t bother to think, to answer. He tugs the bottle of soju closer and giggles when it toppled on the floor spilling clear liquid on the cold tiles. He opens a new bottle and pours himself a glass.

“Don’t make it a habit to drink in the middle of the week.” Kyuhyun tells him when Ryeowook goes home with bottles of alcohol and chips tucked in a bag. Ryeowook shrugs a shoulder and drops on the floor opening a bottle. Kyuhyun stand up from the couch, switches the television off, and retreats to his room, clucking his tongue at Ryeowook while on his way.

Normally Kyuhyun would join him, would sit beside him on the floor, abandoning the couch. Usually Kyuhyun would be the one pouring him a glass, and would be the one giggling when Ryeowook spills. Normally Kyuhyun would be drinking with him, getting drunk with him.

“When did it start?” Ryeowook asks the untouched glass of soju on the other side of the small table. “What did I do?” He downs everything in his glass, half burning his throat, half staining the skin of his neck. “What did I do?” Ryeowook spits the alcohol in his mouth, tasting salt amidst all the bitterness. He wipes at his eyes and curses, tears falling steadily on his cheeks.

Ryeowook thinks he’s crying because he hit his head on the table when he fell. Ryeowook wishes he hit his heart instead, because his head isn’t the one hurting.
--

Ryeowook lays on Kyuhyun’s bed, unmoving as he watches with a blank stare, the sun slowly setting behind the horizon from Kyuhyun’s window.

“I like it here in your room. You have a nice view of the sunset.” Ryeowook remembers himself perched on Kyuhyun’s window, as he watches the pale orange sky of the setting sun.

“The earth is setting.” Ryeowook mumbles, voice hoarse and raw. “It’s dark.” He closes his eyes and gasps when he feels cold tears escaping his shut tight lids. “The sun is watching…. And the sun wouldn’t care”

Kyuhyun stands by the hallway and sighs. He closes the door to his room and heads towards Ryeowook’s room. Kyuhyun lies on Ryeowook’s bed facing the window, waiting for the sun to rise.
