THE RULES
1. Have fun. This a game, guys. If you're not enjoying yourself, talk to it out with a mod or someone in the game, don't start drama. You are free to make suggestions on how to change and improve the game if you wish. If someone is trying to get everyone riled up over something petty, you are going to get kicked out of this game.
2. No godmodding or metagaming. We want to keep the fourth wall in tact as much as we can.
3. IC =\= OOC. Whatever personal problems you may have, don't let them sink into your character.
4. English isn't everyone's strong point, but try your best to use correct spelling and grammar at all times. Anyone who shows an obvious misunderstanding of the language will be seriously hindered from playing in this game.
5. Be respectful of others. No one wants to play with a jackass.
6. If you want to roleplay some sexual, feel free to do so. Just make sure it has a big fat warning in the post or in the one of the subject lines of the thread. There are no exceptions to this rule.
7. You'll notice there's no logs community in this game - that's intentional. All threading/posting is to be done 1st person in the main comm, no need to worry about 3rd person prose here.
8. If you want to go on hiatus, make sure you make a post in the OOC comm so people know that you'll be out of town. If you're going to be out for more than 3 weeks, make sure you speak with one of the mods.
9. As of now, there is no character limit overall, however we ask that you don't play more than 2 characters from one series. Just remember to pace yourselves, quality over quantity people!
10. Put [Character's Name || Series] in your application's subject line so we know you have read the rules!
11. No multiples of characters. So, if someone has applied for say, Iron man from the comics, applying for Iron man from the movies is out of the question. AU's are acceptable if they're canonically ok, for example Erza Scarlet and Erza Knightwalker can co-exist in this game but not Erza Scarlet from the canon and Erza Scarlet from a high school AU.
FAQ
Is there a chatroom?
Yes, but it's on aim. Feel free to invite yourself, or contact a mod to invite you - otokoyochat is the name! The chatroom is going to be very active when night posts are made, since threading is more open then and we want to encourage mods to get to know each other and start some CR while working together to run away from the Takers.
Can we take threads to character journals?
If it's for something like sex or if you want to do a log, then yes it's totally fine. Otherwise, we ask that you try to keep the threads in the main community.
Can I app a character from Kakurenbo?
Yes, however we ask that you make their point of history before the movie begins. This is so they can't give out information on the Takers or anything to the other characters.
Can I reset or canon-update my character?
Yes, just make sure to make a post in the OOC comm so people know what you're doing. If you canon-update your character, you can start playing them updated right away, but if you're completely resetting them, wait about 24 hours after you've announced you are resetting your character.
Is there an age limit for characters?
No, Otokoyo was originally a game played by kids, so there are no problems with that. However, please refrain from applying for any character under 8 years old, as they will not do well in this setting.
Can I apply for a character that's an animal (ie Luna from Sailor Moon or Mao from Darker than Black)?
Yes! However, there are a few special rules with these characters. For one, animals won't have masks, because the Takers won't be chasing them (they only want humans, after all). But, they will still lose and and all super powers at night, plus their ability to speak to humans.
What about cyborgs or zombies?
If the cyborg has any human parts (flesh, organs, anything) they will be treated like a human being and hunted down. Otherwise, they will be treated like the animals.
Zombies will be treated just like normal humans. However, depending on the circumstances of the zombie's reason for being alive, we may not be able to accept them. For example, if the zombie was brought back to life via magic or something, then they would just end up being a corpse at night, with no way of living so it would be a little pointless to have them around. If it's from some kind of disease or natural cause, then it'd be fine.
Is there any way to have communication other than face-to-face action?
No. Because there are no formal apartments and the city is getting beaten down by the running participants and the Takers, it's impossible for someone to leave another mail. Plus, there are no computers, phones, magazines, video cameras, newspapers, radios, nothing - so all of those forms of communication are out too.
Are there any weapons my character can use in the city?
If you're creative, yes! There is broken glass, sticks, pieces of metal, all kinds of things around. You probably won't be able to make guns or anything, but you can at least make some basic things to protect yourself.
Are there any exceptions to the no weapons/items to bring with you rule?
No weapons, items, pets, anything can come with your character (except their clothes, obviously). If there is something that your character needs to survive (like some kind of medicine for a life crippling disease) or if there is something else similar that is constantly endangering your character, please mention it in your application so we can decide what to do about it (such as eradicating the disease or getting rid of necklace that will kill you unless you have special candy every few days).
If there's only gas-stoves and candles around during the day, how is my character going to eat?!
There is still running water in a few places, plus as long as you're creative you can make any number of cooking utensils. Even when the electricity is on at night, there aren't any working stoves, so don't bother trying (unless you're an electrician or something). Actually finding food will be the hard part - there is some canned food in the apartments, but other than that there really isn't much. Unless your character is willing to kill&cook mice, stray animals, and roaches of course.
Ew, that's just gross!!
This is a survival game, honey. If you don't think you or your character can handle it, this isn't the game for you.
Well, what about first aid? Or places to sleep?
Like with the canned food, there are some first aid kits and possibly even medication in the abandoned buildings. These things are few and far between though, so use what you have only when you need to.
As for places to sleep, your character can sleep where ever they can make themselves comfortable. There will probably be spare (if not rusty and old) beds around, but probably not sheets or anything of that sort. Luckily, the weather is always mild, so you don't have to worry about being too cold or too hot. The rain will be your biggest weather-worry.
My character is super strong, even without his/her special abilities! Can they take out one of the Takers?
Only temporarily. The Takers are immortal, you see - even if you break them into a billion pieces, they'll fix themselves right up and be back on your tail.
My character is immortal, does that count as a supernatural ability?
Yes. At night, they're fair game to be severely injured or killed by the Takers. However, when day breaks, they'll have their powers back so they can heal themselves right back up.
How come my character has to wear this stupid fox mask?
It's all part of the game. By wearing the mask, it lets everyone know that you're playing - and since you're stuck here, you must to play.
How often are characters caught by the Takers?
The various takers will always show up and give a chase, but as long as you're clever and know how to hide yourself, it's unlikely that you'll be caught. But, be ready for the unexpected - the Takers are larger and more powerful than you, plus even if they get beat up or destroyed, they can repair themselves.
What exactly is the power source of the City?
Ever wonder what happens to those who get caught by The Takers? The captured children are taken to the very center of the city where an enormous tower stands - it could be a hundred stories for all we know. Along the tower are the bodies of those who are captured by the Takers, strung up to a complex machine that sucks the children of their organs and bodily fluids in order to run the electricity of the town. But, this power source only lasts for a limited time - so "It" constantly plays Otokoyo in order to capture more children to continue playing this game - forever.
