While he was still alive, Naoi was one of the two twin sons of a renowned potter. Despite the fact that he and his brother were identical in every way, his brother had inherited his father's ability to create beautiful pottery, winning various awards in competitions at a very young age and receiving endless amount of praise from both his father and his peers. In the meanwhile, Naoi, having no talent whatsoever to speak of, was left to spend most of his time alone in his room--playing games by himself and being generally neglected by his parents. Things continued to be this way for a long time, and were to remain this way, if not for the fact that, one day, his brother happened to die.
It was an accident, both he and his brother were playing outside when they slipped and fell down a cliff. Fortunately for Naoi, he broke his fall with both a tree and by managing to land on the grass. Unfortunately for his brother, there was absolutely nothing to help him break his fall, not to mention that he landed on a boulder, causing him to smash his skull and die. His parents, distraught over the loss of their suitable heir, decided to "replace" him with Naoi and told everyone that the one to die had been Ayato, and not his brother. Everyone believed that Naoi had been the one to really die that day, and he would be forced to live out the rest of his life as his twin brother.
Upon being released from the hospital, Naoi immediately underwent strict training to reach his brother's level of skill. He was nowhere near his brother's level of skill, however, and in turn ended up on the receiving end of many harsh words and scolding from his father. Eventually, he does manage win an award for his efforts, and even though it wasn't on the same league as all the other awards his brother had won, he was glad to have achieved something.
Soon after this, however, his father became ill with no chance of recovery. Naoi was forced to nurse his father as his family name slowly sank into anonymity, and because of this, he begins to think his entire life was fake, aiding to his already growing identity issues.
Although it is uncertain when and how Naoi died and arrived at the afterlife school, it is revealed that he slowly began to work his way up until becoming achieving the position of Student Council Vice President. Having deducted that whoever had the position of Student Council President was the God of the afterlife, he plots to take the position from Kanade while leading the SSS to believe he is an NPC. To aid this objective, Naoi also begins to develop hypnotism in order to also get rid of the SSS, if at one point they should become too much of an annoyance.
When Kanade is demoted from her position as Student Council President due to failing exams (as the SSS had switched out all of her answer sheets with ones they had made themselves in an attempt to "weaken" her, since they all thought she was an enemy at the time), Naoi finally reaches his objective of becoming "God". His first action, of course, is to punish the SSS for their constant disobedience by sending them to the Reflection Room for a certain period of time. He watches over all the SSS's activities, flanked by a group of NPCs he had hypnotized into obeying his every order, causing the SSS to flee when he suddenly appears in the classroom they were all gathered in during one of his rounds around the school. Thanks to Yuri, we also learn that after doing this, he usually goes up to the school rooftop to beat up a pair of NPCs.
After he sends Otonashi and Kanade to the Reflection Room, having caught them eating outside of lunch hour, Naoi and the SSS confront each other in battle. However, Naoi uses NPCs as both meat shields and to attack the SSS, knowing that one of their principles is to never attack any of the NPCs, quickly turning this from a "fair" fight to a one-sided massacre. While Otonashi and Kanade escape the Reflection Room, Naoi mercilessly kills each member of the SSS, shooting them down at the first sign of resistance against him and the other members of the Student Council who were fighting alongside with him.
When Otonashi and Kanade finally arrive, they both confront him, with Kanade preparing herself to attack him with her Guard Skills, when Naoi stops them in their tracks by revealing to them his position as "God". He reveals that in this world which chooses its own God, anybody who had a cruel life had the right to achieve that position, and that by becoming the Student Council President, he had finally reached that point. Even though both Otonashi and Hinata object to the idea, Naoi proclaims that he was only trying to put the SSS to "rest", and that this had only turned into a massacre due to the fact that they had resisted.
In order to demonstrate what he intends to do, he grabs Yuri, explaining to her how people disappear in the afterlife school and that he doesn't need to know about her past in order to grant "eternal rest" to her, and then goes on to reveal that he had been using hypnotism in order to control all of the NPC members of the Student Council. He then uses his hypnotism on Yuri in order to replace the memories keeping her in the afterlife with happy ones, but is however so distracted by this, that he doesn't even notice when Otonashi runs up to him in order to punch him in the face. Otonashi calls him out for trying to force them all to pass on by erasing memories of the lives they led with fake ones, and asks him if he considered his own life a fake, to which Naoi responds that he does. Much to his surprise, Otonashi then holds him and blurts out that his life was real and that he had tried his best while still alive, as he wouldn't be in the afterlife school otherwise, and then acknowledges him for who he is. Thanks to those words from Otonashi, Naoi abandons his plan of making the SSS disappear and begins to deeply admire Otonashi.
By the next time we see Naoi, he has become part of the SSS, although he holds no respect for anybody other than Otonashi and only follows orders from Yuri and the others when told to do so by him. During this time he follows the SSS in various missions, such as Operation Monster Stream (fishing in a river where this huge monster!fish resides, basically) and rescuing Kanade from aggressive clones of herself she had accidentally created of herself, providing deductions that actually proved to be correct.
For some reason or another, even though Naoi isn't present at all when Otonashi begins to secretly help others pass on with the help of Kanade (and later Hinata), the next time he's with Otonashi he seems to be completely aware of this plan of his, much to both he and Hinata's surprise. While Naoi and Hinata bicker over which one of them would be the one to "help" Otonashi make everyone pass on, Naoi is attacked by one of the Shadow NPCs but manages to escape without becoming an NPC himself thanks to Hinata and Otonashi's help. From there on, Naoi sticks close to Otonashi while the SSS attempts to fend off the Shadow NPCs and stop the attack, helping Otonashi offer passing on as an alternative to staying here and risking getting converted into an NPC themselves, until in the end he is one of the last five left in the afterlife school (alongside with Otonashi, Hinata, Yuri and Kanade), as every other member of the SSS had passed on during or after the Shadow NPC attack.
After the graduation ceremony (which had been an idea of Kanade's, as she had never graduated before when she was still alive), Naoi goes on to thank Otonashi for helping him get over his regrets and giving him the courage to finally move on, pretty much sobbing in front of everyone as he does this. Once he's done thanking Otonashi, and after receiving a pat on the head as encouragement, Naoi finally moves on from the afterlife school.
[Personality]
At first glance, Naoi will seem like your usual bratty little prick with a huge ego and a God complex--and to be honest, you'd be completely and utterly right. Because of the way the afterlife works, Naoi considers that anybody who achieves the position of Student Council President would become the God of the afterlife school and would be granted the freedom to do whatever they wish to do with the world. Since his life was so terrible, he believes that he deserves this chance to become God in order to make up for it, and, of course, then there is the part that if there was something people would always acknowledge in one way or another, it was God. Because of this, Naoi slowly works his way up to achieve this position, as if nobody would acknowledge him as Ayato, then they would surely have to acknowledge him as God. Of course, this all leads up to the fact that underneath all that arrogance there is a part of Naoi that just wants somebody to acknowledge him for who he truly is.
Because of how he was forced to trade places with his twin brother at a young age, Naoi was led to believe that his whole life was a fake. Up until his confrontation with Otonashi, he had come to believe that he did not exist--that it had always been just his father and his twin brother, and that the one that had truly died that day after falling off the cliff had been himself.
Despite how cruelly his father had treated him, basically neglecting him until his brother's death and then making him trade places with him, Naoi had truly looked up to the man. Before his brother's death, his father had never even looked at him, and once he had traded places with his twin brother his father finally began to pay attention to him. Even though most of the time he was scolding him for not living up to his expectations, he finally began to praise him and Naoi found his place in life. Not surprisingly, once his father becomes ill and dies, it hits Naoi hard. Although the reason as to why the switch had occurred in the first place was now moot, there would be no turning back. He was forced to live out the rest of his life as his brother, contributing to his identity issues.
It is due to these reasons that, above all, what Naoi wants the most is to be acknowledged. It is because of this that he plotted to become the Student Council President, in order to be acknowledged as the God of the afterlife school. When Otonashi tells him that there is nobody he could acknowledge but Naoi, he pretty much loses all of his arrogance towards him and begins to deeply admire him. He would do anything Otonashi tells him to (short of disappearing from the afterlife without him or leaving him alone with Hinata), and would put himself in harm’s way for him without hesitation. At one point, he even admits that the only thing keeping him from passing on is his desire to stay by Otonashi's side until the very end.
If anybody else were to acknowledge Naoi for who he is, he would react in a similar way, although he won't completely stop being a prick towards them. He would become generally friendlier and less arrogant, and would be less prone to insulting them or losing his patience with them. All his needs is for them to give him that acknowledgement he yearns for once, and he will consider them worthy of his time.
Of course, he considers everyone else around him a nuisance. He tends to have a rather low opinion of others and people in general annoy him, thus he tends to think everyone he meets is an idiot unless proven otherwise. Even then, it takes a lot to gain his respect, and usually a little nudge in the right direction from Otonashi. If he finds you extremely annoying or simply dislikes you, he isn't above using his hypnotism for trolling purposes and his own amusement--just like when he hypnotized Hinata into believing he was lower than a clothespin, and when he attempted to hypnotize him again into believing he was toilet paper being flushed down a toilet.
Unless you have somehow managed to get him to like you or have somehow managed to gain his respect, Naoi will mostly interact with others with extreme arrogance. He hates people who dwindle on unnecessary details and has nearly no patience for those who grate on his nerves, which leads him to insulting or outright offending everyone who manages to get on his bad side. Unless he's in a "charitable" mood and you play along with his God complex (or you happen to be, you know, Otonashi), he will treat everyone around him rather poorly.
Of course, the fact that he himself is quite intelligent and overly capable as a leader doesn't help matters at all. He already has a rather low opinion of everyone around him, which only worsens when they prove themselves to be on a lower level of intelligence than himself. He hates taking orders from others (except Otonashi, and perhaps even Yuri in the odd occasion where he's pushed into doing so by Otonashi), and will ignore most attempts at getting him to follow orders, preferring to be in charge himself.
[Specialties/Abilities]
As mentioned above in the history section, during his time in the afterlife school Naoi developed his own hypnotism skills (perhaps even using the same software Kanade used to create her own Guard Skill abilities, but nothing about this is ever explained).
Unlike the conventional hypnotist, Naoi's skills are less like "hypnotism" and more like outright mind control. All he needs is to make eye contact, give a command, and he can instantly hypnotize whoever he wants. He can do this as many times as he wants, and can do anything to the person being hypnotized as long as it abides to the laws of physics. As long as the person looks at Naoi's eyes, even for a split second, and Naoi can see their eyes, they're fair game to him. If someone were to have their eyes covered by something (like a bandanna or by wearing shades that completely obscure their eyes) or if Naoi was blindfolded, his powers would be useless and he would be unable to hypnotize the person. His hypnotism can also be used for a variety of things, such as recovering lost memories or tampering with them, ordering them to do something, or just mindfucking them if they happen to get on his nerves. As long as no laws of physics are broken, he can do anything with this.
Of course, his when it comes to giving out orders, his hypnotism isn't permanent. Depending on what the person is ordered to do, it can last from seconds, to days and even months. Still, while things like forcing somebody to remember something they forgot and inserting a new memory into their brain is meant to be permanent, it can still be nullified if he's interrupted while doing this. The same can also apply to commands, if he's interrupted before he's done giving out the order the person will snap out of it pretty quickly.
If the commands aren't interrupted, however, they can last for quite a while. When Naoi hypnotized the NPCs into obeying him, they did so without any complaints, always following him when he went on rounds around the campus. Even when he fights with the SSS, the NPCs he had hypnotized followed him around, shooting the SSS members without hesitation and turning the fight into a massacre. While it isn't specified how or when, it is assumed that his control over the NPCs wore off after Naoi joins the SSS--which means that he can either cancel out his hypnotism himself when he no longer has any use for it, or that simply lost its effect after being used to such extent; perhaps even both.
Aside that, every other ability he had, like dying and respawning in 30 minutes or being able to walk off major damage like getting an eye gauged out of his arm chopped off, was produced by the afterlife itself, so he won't be carrying that over here to Somarium.
[Affection] Ahahahaha--oh. Unless your name happens to be Otonashi Yuzuru or you've somehow managed to ~become worthy~ of ~God's affection~, good luck. That aside, feel free to try and get cuddly with him. He hates physical contact though, so I can't guarantee he won't punt you or something. |Db
[Fighting] Feel free to punch him in the face or anything short of killing him. In the world he comes from, nobody takes mutilation or death seriously, so I mean.
[Other Permissions] Mindreaders and fourth walling is fine by me. He will be extremely peeved by it, especially if you bring up his loldeadbrother Kento or anything about when he was alive, but yeah. :|b Feel free to contact me about this if you're unsure about anything.
[Other Facts] Before his hypnotism activates, Naoi's eyes begin to change from their usual color to a bright red. Once his eyes turn completely red (which takes about two seconds), it's usually too late to escape Naoi's hypnotism unless someone else interrupts him.
