Desktop nattering.

I'm getting sick of running a traditional desktop. It's unclear to me whether I'm just getting older or whether it has to do with the endless distractions I get in my working day. Let's be honest here - at this very moment I have 7 windows open: one is my web browser (with a backlog of, cough, story tabs), one is mail, one is an explorer windows, ( Read more... )

You know, I've never seen a set-up like yours, though. You've got the monitor on the coffee table, and then the TV like, past that. Very three-dimensional, I thought. I was curious what kind of clever things you could do with that, but I had so much going on just then it was arrrgh. (Yeah, next time I'm in the neighborhood, it will be under better conditions.)

Sometimes, it feels good to freshen up things in your environment once and a while. For people like you and me, that means our computers, too, since that's part of our environment.

Well, the main reason I put the setup this way is because I found that running a media PC isn't quite what it's cracked up to be. Every time I wanted to do anything full-screen, I also wanted to have something else going in a corner somewhere, and I didn't want to pop myself out of full screen, go do the task, then go back. If I play a movie and relax, I want IM up and running. If I'm playing a video game, particularly if they're ^&&(#@$ ridiculous RPGs like the one I'm doing now, I probably want a FAQ open.

In addition, there are times when I want a closer screen, particularly for text viewing, and times I want a larger screen.

It's not really ideal, to be honest. Most people in real homes split it into some sort of media server + separate client machine setup, but that seemed like ridiculous overkill for one person in one apartment (except in the summer, when it gets too hot in here to do anything outside the bedroom).
