Yuletide thoughts

For some reason I'm looking forward to Christmas more than usual. Yes, I'm Buddhist and I still celebrate Christmas, the most materialistic of holidays. But it's not about the material, but about the legacy of love that has always been associated with it in my family. It's not materialistic in its roots, though. I'm pagan now, but was brought up Catholic with a Polish-American emphasis on the holiness of the day. And my childhood wasn't always so great, there was dysfunction in my family. And yet we still managed to enjoy Christmas, most of the time. These days it's still kind of special to me, especially Christmas Eve. I can still feel the magic ;D I hate the commercialized blitz that starts in August/Sept. :( ...but that's the outward stuff. It's the inner celebration that counts. Solstice is what we celebrate at my house, the return of the light, and that resonates with the older message from our childhood. For me it's about nostalgia now, as so many of my immediate family are gone. The memories make me sad and happy at the same time. Nothing does that quite like this time of year.
