I've read a couple of pieces on how that wheel gizmo works, but not owning one myself, I'm not certain that I understand it completely. I would be concerned that some of the traces may have become minutely corroded, perhaps not even visibly so, which would degrade the capacitive abilities of the sensor in proximity to human skin. Try and get the Apple Store to fix it. If they won't, you might try VERY carefully applying isopropyl alcohol such that it gets where the water went, and causes the water to evaporate more thoroughly.
What James said. I suspect it'll be fine though if it gets dried out. Cap contacts do go crazy with moisture - try using the ibook's trackpad with a wet finger; same effect.
