And I Have a Theory...
I was rewatching the start of episode one for some dialog, but I noticed something.
We now know that Prince James isn't a pretty boy prince, in episode 1 - when it's just him and Snow - he's wearing leather pants and a shirt. 3 he's wearing the same pants and shirt but with a doublet (also leather).
So the red coat with silver braid is a fancy coat, something you would wear to a council meeting.
As of episode 3 we also know that James is engaged to a blond haired floozy princess.
My theory: The Kiss of Awesome Curse Braking (TM) that was the start of the series takes place on the wedding day of James and What's-her-name, after James flees the scene ah la Henry in "Ever After".
