I didn't like Planet Terror as much as I thought I would. Tarantino's Death Proof I think is the best out of the double feature. I loved I Stand Alone, but I could think of a few things that would make it better. It doesn't seem to be the favorite of people familiar with Gaspar Noé's work, however I am not so familiar so maybe that's why I found it to be better than the people I've talked to. Everyone seems to love Tarkovsky's The Mirror, I couldn't quite get into it as much as everyone else. It just seemed to have too much pretention in some scenes, but I've found films that have a stream of consciousness tend to make me feel that way. What made you give it a 10/10?
I watched Death Proof first and from the previews, I assumed I would love Planet Terror more but I also think that Death Proof was better. I did not really love either one, Death Proof was too talky. I don't mind talky at all but I feel that dialog in a Tarantino movie is fake and awkward.
As for I Stand Alone, I have only seen two films from Noe, this and Sodomites. Neither I found to amusing. As for I Stand Alone, I was annoyed by the zooming jump cuts, I did not like the main character and got tired of hearing his whining and the ending was disappointing. Overall it is not my type of movie.
Mirror on the other hand is my type of movie. Mirror would be included in my top 5 favorite movies ever. I can see how you could find parts pretentious. I really like the voice overs and the read poetry which often people dislike. I think of Mirror as visual poetry.
I really need to rewatch it and see how I feel the second time. This appears to be a movie which is better the second time around.
Anyways, I had mixed feelings about it. I really loved some parts such as the scene in your avatar and I though the ending was excellent but there were lots of parts which I disliked.
Had they chosen a different actors for the two men, I would have liked it more. I had trouble caring about the goofy sidekick and the older balding man so their story was lessened.
Overall it was good but with a few changes I would have liked it much more.
Yeah, a lot of people, including Barney Rosset, had problems with Henry Miller's character, who was a ballerina and picked just because he looks similar to Miller. Originally Rip Torn was supposed to play the roll, which would have been amazing.
I just thought the first 30 minutes of that movie, pretty much through when he keeps dreaming of food, were, nearly, perfect. I've never had such a joyous experience watching a movie.
