sushi etiquette

Do you eat sushi with any regularity?

I eat less of it in the wintertime. In the winter, I prefer more hot or warm foods.

When the weather warms up, I eat sushi more often.

While I do like mixing the wasabi with the shoyu, I have sometimes put the wasabi directly on the fish, at times. Usually when eating a sushi-to-go bento lunch.

Interesting -- some of what that says contradicts what we were encouraged to do at a Japanese restaurant around here. It's no longer in business so I can't go back and get curious.

But coincidentally I spotted this earlier in the week --

In other news, Victoria's school is changing from Japanese study to Chinese next year. I emailed to ask which Chinese. I'll let you know how I feel about the switch when I've had time to think about it some more. I was a bit surprised that the principle didn't specify in his initial email, but he usually answers emails quickly.

Mandarin.
Am I remembering correctly that you were giving me words in Cantonese not Mandarin?

I know very little Mandarin. To me, Mandarin is the "funny-sounding" Chinese, not the "normal-sounding" Chinese ( ... )

BTW, it's interesting to note that the holding the bowl of rice up to use the chopsticks to scoop technique is a "no-no" in your link.

I was always told that it is okay to do that.

I wonder if that's a real difference in Chinese vs Japanese etiquette?

(Or maybe my fame's roots are just too rural?)
