You make a good point, but I'll explain to you why I hang onto my past. I need it. Without my past, I would not be the same person I am today. The person I am is the sum total of all my experiences, good and bad, that have passed. No matter how bad the bad parts might have been, I never want to forget them, because they are a part of me, and without them, I'm like a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. Of course, our past is a vital thing that we can't easily separate ourselves from. It's not even a matter of choice, really. But what I was getting at was that sometimes we tend to live in our pasts, sometimes hiding from something that is to come in the future, or to punish ourselves by reliving a mistake we made. The past is not habitable, for me, because it is only with our memory that the past exists. It is useful, certainly, but not when we are absolutely dependant on it.

It took me 30+ years to give myself permission to live in the present. Let's face it, that's where you spend all of your time and that;s where you keep all your stuff. Goals are fine, but I spent too much of my life gauging myself against them and not enjoying where I'm at or giving myself credit for the journey itself.
