SO I THOUGHT I MIGHT DO A POST ABOUT THIS YES. Czes has been introducing himself as 'Thomas'. Why? He ... has some issues! DISCLAIMER: I AM PLAYING FROM WHAT I CAN GET FROM THE ANIME. IF THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE NOVEL I. I. I DON'T KNOW OKAY. I'M SORRY ♥
What the anime tells us about Czes:
He was aboard the Advena Avis that sailed in 1711.
He was born in 1699.
He looks to Fermet for ... well it looks like everything, or did.
Fermet has poked out his eyes with a hot poker, dumped him in a bath of acid and thrown him in a fire. At least.
He introduces himself as 'Thomas' to Clare.
He is intending to use an alias when he introduces himself to everyone in the dining. Car. Thing.
Maiza says he's the type who tries to take everything on himself.
He thought Maiza was going to eat him.
He ate Fermet in retaliation for being tortured.
He doesn't trust/is afraid of Immortals. (Isaac train thing)
He remains a child, 200 years later.
What I speculate from this:
Fermet and Czes lived together for extended periods of time. In the 1700s I can't tell if Fermet is his father or what, but it's clear from their body language and such that Czes does what Fermet does. He looks to him, but rarely is he thrilled, in fact most of his expressions from that episode are ones of uncertainty or fear. After the 1711 incident we have no idea what happens! However, we do get flashbacks of Fermet being a creepy bastard, I make the assumption that Fermet tortured Czes for long periods of time and it was not just an isolated event, considering that it seems to have had such a large impact on his life.*
Czes is terrified of other Immortals. You see the scene where he realizes Isaac is the Immortal he was trying to find and he flips out. He is missing an arm and kind of out of it but still really actively tries to NOT be near Isaac at all. He thinks Maiza is going to eat him (from his expression and then realization nothing bad is going to happen). He is going to eat Isaac (or so I assumed) before Isaac grabs his hand and is all :DDDDD.
Czes has Trust Issues. We can thank Fermet.
Logically if one has been around for 200 years it would probably be a bit odd to go by the same name for 200 years.
Getting close to people is! Difficult for Czes. He would rather not.
* - however I am also toying around with the idea of Immortality somehow coming at a price of personal growth. Those we see as Immortals don't seem to have expanded past who they used to be and seem to be stuck in a constant state of what they were. Isaac & Miria, Czes, Maiza etc.
