So it turns out that what I had thought was a remote worst-case scenario is actually the case - the bone around the root of my tooth is deteriorating. The treatment is dental surgery (scheduled for September) in which they cut the gum where the hole in the bone is, reach in and cut off the end of the root

Thank you for your kind thoughts. As you might expect, now that I know what's going on in there, it seems more painful than before. I think I'm now less likely to poke the sore spot, though, so it will probably actually be less painful.
