Oh FTLOG. You know what, Chinatown is a pretty awesome movie. I own the DVD and I might have been inclined to see it if it was showing on a big screen somewhere nearby (and not in the Valley). I know people love I Tess too - although given the creepiness of his "relationship" with Nastassja Kinski that almost certainly started while she was under- ( Read more... )

Did you see the Polanski segment last night on Larry King Live on CNN? A woman from the DA's office was one of the guests and they were talking about what was probably going to happen in the case. It sounded almost like a procedural thing and they simply wanted Polanski finally sentenced (to what was agreed on 30 years ago) so that he would be considered finally "convicted."

The entire segment made me want to punch my TV set. There was another female guest who was Sharon Tate's cousin and this woman's double-speak was amazinggggg. She works for a "victims' rights" group and kept saying that Polanski was a victim and that there was "extenuating circumstances" going on when he raped that girl.

King then went over the list of young girls that Polanski had been involved with (which included Natassia Kinski), and the woman stated that older men sleeping with young girls was a "rite of passage." Bleagh. D:

Ew, ew, ew. A right of passage marking what? Their sad and molestation-tastic passage into creepy middle age?

They're not going to add extra to his original sentence for running away? I'd expected him to at least get a slap on the wrist for that, regardless of how famous he is and how cheerfully people seem to be able to disregard his original crime.

No, they're not going to add on for his fleeing the country. There WAS some crooked stuff going on involving the judge at the time, so no one could really blame Polanski for fleeing at the time. The current DA just wants to finally put this case to rest, once and for all.

I meet your hatehatehate and raise you. I have a nice list of people I now boycott. Who will NEVER see another dime from me. All those Hollywood types who signed that petition? DEAD TO ME. It must be very grim for you as someone who works in the industry.

Oh I have that list going to. I've been trying to rank it - you know people who signed the petition AND made supportive comments are higher than people who simply signed. People who signed but asked to be removed slightly lower - but only marginally so unless they also make a statement about why they signed and that they abhor Mr. Polanski.

LOL I've probably put waaaaay too much thought into this.

God, I thought only ranked them. For me it's like Dante's circle of hell. The most support, the lower you sink. You know the real assholes get their eyes pecked out by crows. I heard that Emma Thompson was going to remove her name. That signature was very hard to see.

That one was hard, as was seeing a whole slew of my formally favorite directors had signed it. The list is just so long -there should be an iPhone app that tells you if a movie you're going to see has any of these people associated with it.

This stuff drives me crazy. I know we've always forgiven artists for doing bad things, but good grief, can't we draw the line somewhere? It's just another precedent that says "Women don't matter."

Yes, agreed. I mean the line for "Artists will be Artists" should probably be somewhere around peeing in your fireplace during a party, not drugging and raping children.
