OK I have to say this

We have said not much bothers us about people getting the terms wrong when it comes to us being multiple because there is so much to learn if you dont know, its perfectly understandable. However, if you yourself are multiple please learn the correct terms for the love of....my sanity! lmao ( Read more... )

I have multiples sounds like they caught something, not that they ARE something or HAVE something. Like 'I have a cold' or 'I have two phones'.

Its proper english actually. To use it that way isnt just confusing, or wrong, but its gramatically incorrect.

You ARE multiple. You HAVE multiple personality disorder. You ARE multiple people. You HAVE a diagnosed disorder that is called MPD. You are NOT having multiple anything - unless its multiple issues at the same time, then its just an unfinished sentence.

Multiple + s - is redundant in any form of a sentence when referencing one body.

Although, a group of MPD'S would, in fact, be multiples - multiple multiples actually.

Typing it that many times, now the word just looks odd to me ....bah!

/agreement rant.

We ussually say - there are quite a few people in here ;-)

on 'Alters'
-----------
Alters - you mean I'M the real one and i get to eat you all
up ! COOL.

That just irritates the shit out of us.

I should be able to think of something snarky to say but drawing
a blank.

Thanks for keeping this public.

We dont mind the term alters usually and mostly because there isnt another word for singlets to understand to replace that word. Her father said "those people in your head"....that to me was more offensive simply because of the tone it was said in. So I guess it just depends on a lot of things...besides sj would never eat us...erm ya ;)

We are offended by alter because it harks back to the philosophy
that says - 'I'm the core and all you are my alters and you all
will be integrated'.

We have educated a few therapists on that issue and they were
quite appreciative.

Im confused on how alters is used. I mean, it doesnt seem right to me. Who determines who the 'real' person is vs alters? You are all REAL people ( ... )

And as even an asside on THIS comment, I tend to assume that when I reply to a post by an individual person within your community of people, Im speaking directly to that person. I rarely reference YOU as YOU ALL unless I really intend to convey the message back to everyone that I speak with.

Is that somehow wrong or offensive? Now Im worried.....

If I make a post and leave my name on it, and you reply, it makes perfect sense that you would be replying to me. It is not offensive to any of us. Just someone else may end up replying back to you instead depending on who is out or who feels like they have the most to say in response.

Hmm I suppose the other side of this is that could be offensive that the orignal person doesnt reply back but I never thought of that before.

Hah your first reply made me lol.

who determines who the core personality is? Who determines who is an 'alter'?...

Yes, its different for every multiple system we know. We say Beth/sj is the core because it seems to be true for our system. She was the one who found out she was multiple back in uh 1999.(i think thats when she was diagnosed.) So we say sj is multiple and we didnt mind being called alters because back then its just the way it was and we didnt think anything of it. We still dont mind, and partly because there is not another term that is as simply understood. But that is just us, other systems we know are deeply offended by the use of that word.

More - am I making some kind of Multiple-social fax pas by asking?Nope not at all, we would rather people ask things if they dont know. I think most multiple systems would rather people just ask what they want to know instead of assuming, but the problem is some people can be really stupid about the way they ask things and it comes across as accusatory or something else ( ... )

if our group has some that actually are Multiple themselves, can we say "we have Multiples?" *grin*

NOoooo LMAO Are you just trying to confuse me?!? *giggles*
Seriously though I think that would confuse people who already dont know how to use the term correctly. You could say I AM multiple and other people inside are also multiple...uh ya...that sounds longgggg lol sorry I dont know really :)

hee! I was playing with you. ;) I don't think we've ever used that word like that before. We actually say we're a Multiple Group instead of just Multiple. or wait, about "I have the Multiples"? like having the measles. lol
