kipani_mariko This time it's about our Host Club King Tamaki!
The director reveals the inside scoop on King Tamaki!
It might get a bit long so please forgive me.
Even before crank-in*, Yusuke was probably the most nervous one amongst the host club members. This is because during rehearsals, Yusuke had the habit of saying “I don't know” & “It's hard” over and over again. I think I can understand his feeling. It was his first time delving so deeply into a character, on top of that this was a very popular comic. Also at that time Yusuke was in another TBS drama in which he played a character that was completely opposite from Tamaki.
Right before cranking in, I told Yusuke that he should be charming & elegant from the tips of his fingers and just act silly. Now that I think about it, that was probably a hard order ^^; I'm not sure if it ever helped, but I told him to imagine the Takarazuka performers who played male roles. However, from the beginning of filming, Yusuke was very distressed. There were quite a lot of NGs and a few retakes...
However, by the time we finished filming episode 1, the words “I don't know” had disappeared from Yusuke's mouth and he stopped making NGs. The turning point was during the second half of the filming of episode 1 in which there is a scene where Tamaki is shot by an arrow and falls. Usually we would put a mat under (the actor) so they do not get hurt when they fall, but Yusuke refused the mat and did that scene many times.
For fear of injury during scenes in which Tamaki is blown away, we always suggested a mat, but Yusuke said it was fine and acted with all his strength. Truthfully, I was very surprised. Not being afraid of being hurt, Yusuke definitely had the soul of an actor. In no time Yusuke had connected with Tamaki. And I felt that Yusuke's Tamaki was born.
Yusuke probably didn't think that there would be so much action in Ouran. He was suspended by wire so many times that he had so many bruises. As each episode progressed, Yusuke improved on the elegance, the foolishness, and his fearlessness during the action scenes. It felt great watching Yusuke delve so deeply in his role. I think many who watched Ouran also felt it. Of course he improves even more in the movie so please look forward to it!
Thank you everyone for your words of support. That scene in the first episode where Haruhi yells out “Uzai” and Tamaki is blown onto the wall by the words made out of rock, we had to use wire action many times. Yusuke pulled the club together by putting his life on the line for this! Without Tamaki there would be no Ouran.
