This time is on everyone's favorite bunny boy Chiba Yudai
The director reveals the inside scoop on Honey sempai, Chiba Yudai
The casting of all the characters was very hard, we were especially at a loss for Honey sempai because it was physically impossible to (find someone like him). I had thought about looking at the list of the latest child actors but when I saw Chiba Yudai's profile picture I thought “this could work...”. However there were many people who were against a 170cm tall Honey sempai or they wanted the “Kodomo Tencho” *. I had to rethink about challenging my choice. Furthermore, although Chiba had worked one year as Gosei Red, this would technically be his first real drama series.
Of course during rehearsals Chiba-chan was also very nervous. During rehearsals we were in pursuit of lots of cuteness. It was hard to find the right amount of cute without turning into an okama, so there was a lot of trial and error. He talked about observing children for his research (as Honey)
Also after a while, members of the host club started to tease him especially Tamaki. Eventually everyone joined in and lastly Haruhi joined as well (laughs). But that may have been for the good. With the teasing of Chiba-chan, the cast became better friends and Chiba-chan became more relaxed. The communication that went within the dressing room came alive in their performance.
I think through this drama, Chiba may have been the one who grew up the most. The root of maturity is through the dedication of research. He often observed the movements of children and to research the best way to look more cute. He played the skipping scenes so naturally! And his courage. It may be surprising but in fact his face is very manly, but the courage in his acting is so great!
When I talked about how “in reality, no high school student is that cute so you can play this character freely” I felt that this actor got better and better. He was able to play an innocent cute character but at the same time show his black side during the action scenes. When I realized it, Bachi's Honey had became a very popular character despite all the bashing in the beginning. (From fans of the Ouran manga/anime on the Ouran BBS and other places)
In the beginning I kept saying “Make Honey cuter!” but by the time we came to filming for the movie, I didn't have to worry about his performance. There are lots of great Honey scenes in the movie so please look forward to it!
There have been many surprising voices in regards to Honey being 170cm tall. Chiba-chan tried to bend naturally as much as possible to look shorter.
In the beginning we shrunk Honey but when we finished editing episode 1 we felt that Honey was cute enough that we didn't need to shrink him anymore. We stopped after episode 2. In the manga he was supposed to be categorized as a loli-shota but we didn't feel it fit Chiba-chan so we took a risk and changed him into the lovely type.
