This is good news! Hopefully, Lionsgate will recognize that everything is wrapped up well and extending the franchise beyond a trilogy will corrupt the original story...and a new director/writing team will probably turn it into a joke horror series like so many others we've seen.
They're ending it at the right time. How much longer can Jigsaw fight cancer? lol
This franchise could've gone on too long, like Friday the 13th, Halloween, or A Nightmare on Elm Street, and like you said, it would've become a joke. And it wouldn't be the same if James, Leigh, or Darren weren't involved in the series.

While the directors have stated that "Saw III" concludes what they wanted to say in the "Saw" series, there is talk that a "Saw IV" and possibly future movies beyond that are being planned.
At the Comic-Con in July it was announced that if "Saw III" proved to be a success, future movies would be planned.
Of course, if LionGate Films goes ahead and produces another movie without the original writers and/or director, the quality of a "Saw IV," "Saw V," etc. is questionable, but the website Filmstalker claims that actor Tobin Bell has already signed up for a fourth film and that multiple writers are already working on the film. Is this possible? Maybe. But we'd just have to see.

Yeah, his manager told us that in July. I'd go see it anyway, just because it's Tobin. He has fun with the character. I'm sure he'll find ways to make it work.
