an examination of conscience... if you were in love with someone (or at least thought you were), and they didn't feel the same way about you for whatever reason, but you somehow acquired the ability to change that (i.e. you acquire the ability to change your appearance at will, you come across a number of wishes that can affect someones affections ( Read more... )

wasn't atreyu that kid from neverending story? ah, another moral/ethics question. personally, whether or not i used/abused some power that I had would depend on the nature of that power. some things would cross that intuitive threshold for being "too much" while others would skirt by and I wouldn't feel bad about it. changing my appearance? hey, you gotta make first contact somehow. if appearance became the crux of the relationship afterwards then I wouldn't keep it, but you have to have some thing to start things out with. wishes? as long as they weren't the "are you afraid of the dark"/monkey paw kind of wishes that made things happen through socially "wrong" means ( ... )

Such a simple question, yet so complicated as well...I've been thinking about this all day since I first saw the post this morning and I still haven't come up with a straight and simple answer.

I think that if there were some natural means of changing the way she feels about me, I'd jump at the opportunity (i.e. something I could do or say, some situation I could arrange for, change my appearence in a naturally occuring way, etc). However, unnaturally altering her mind to change her feelings would be no better than drugging someone slash getting them drunk to get with them. If I unnaturally altered myself into something she could fall in love with, it wouldn't really be me she is falling in love with, it would be whatever I altered myself into. Even within "natural" means though, there could still be possibilities that I would consider too unethical.
