pls to advise: vegan gelatin

Oct 19, 2007 08:41

Vegetarians and Vegans, lend me your experience and opinion:
What non-hoofed gelatin-like substance is best for (faking) "jello"?
Recommendations? Any tricks?

I'm shooting for a mid-Century, mid-America jello salad here.

misuba made a gelatinous, vegan, squash soup pie at a columbus day once with agar agar that was eerily jello-like.

When 2 of the 3 main ingredients are not vegan, this seems a difficult prospect. (Those ingredients being: Jello, Cool-Whip, and fruit cocktail - note the very 1950's-esque fact that the ingredients are actually referred to by brand name )

I've heard that this is a good vegan alternative to Cool Whip:

Also, some of the store brand Cool Whippish products actually are entirely dairy free.

d'you think it is as good a shoe polish, pomade, or aid in thawing frozen fish?

non-dairy, but with a milk-derived protein

We did a "jello" fruit salad using a vegan boxed gel powder that was agar agar based. It sets FAST but not as hard as Jell-O so it was a tad droopy.

Why not head to Food Fight and ask them?

i believe that knox is vegan; gelatine is vegetable-derived, gelatin isn't. they try to confuse you! i blame the Beef Conspiracy (Tee Em)! i haven't used it, but it sounds good doesn't it?

I don't think there's a difference between gelatin and gelatine except the spelling. Either way, Knox is definitely animal-derived.

Gelatin is the US spelling while gelatine is the British spelling, and both are made from bones, tendons, and skin. Some kosher "gelatins" are in fact vegan, but most aren't. Knox isn't veg, unfortunately.
