[IC Information]
Character Name: Solid Snake (real name: David; occasionally uses the alias ‘Iroquois Pliskin’)
Series: Metal Gear Solid
Gender: Male
Age: 37 (physically appears to be in his mid forties)
Species: Clone (Human)
Sexuality: Pansexual
Appearance: Eyes: Snake has dark green eyes. Though intense and wary, their gaze is not necessarily unkind.
Hair: Snake’s hair is dark brown and shaggy, tending to hang loose around his face and the back of his head. He wears it in a mullet tied back with a dark blue bandanna that he is almost always never seen without.
Face: Vaguely Asian with a sharp nose, a strong jaw dotted with stubble, high cheekbones, and full lips. A side effect of his genetic coding, he suffers from accelerated aging and appears much older than he actually is.
Build: Snake measures at about 6’ft and weighs 176lbs. He has broad shoulders and strong, muscular arms and legs; in short, the body of an athlete. Whilst not frail by any means, his constitution doesn’t exactly compliment his frame as he tends to get sick rather easily.
Attire: Snake is typically seen in his teal “sneaking suit”: a bodysuit designed to withstand harsh environments and prevent hypothermia. The suit serves as his official attire of sorts during missions ever since he obtained it in 2005, though it isn’t entirely in the best of shape due to the constant wear and tear it has undergone in the past four years.
Personality: Snake’s Enneagram personality type is Type One: The Reformer. He is realistic, conscientious and principled with the need to seek truth in order to accomplish his very basic need to do the right thing. A perfectionist by nature, he is driven to reform and improve the world and, in effect, himself; a philosophical idealist, essentially, who struggles to gleam order from chaos.
Described as a “real bastard” on more than one occasion even by his closest friends, Snake takes cynical pride in his inability to live up to the legendary hero history has painted him out to be in terms of personality. He is often jaded and sardonic, though this does not mean he is as insensitive as first impressions often dictate. The truth of the matter is that Snake is actually a very thoughtful and caring individual, but his introversive attitude coupled with his tendency to self-restrain his emotions usually has him come across as aloof and distant. Whilst the latter may be more true than he would like to admit, he takes no joy nor exaltation from the fame his past exploits have given him and, if anything, grows rather uncomfortable with the recognition and praise he receives from being “the man who makes the impossible possible”. Most of this discomfort stems from the haunting memories and nightmares he still suffers from the events that transpired at Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land; as much as he’d love to forget the ordeals entirely, he knows at heart that it’s ultimately impossible.
He is stern and forthright, and it really doesn’t take much to wear his patience thin. His inability to achieve the perfection he desires feeds his feelings of guilt for having fallen short, fueling his developing anger against an imperfect, unfair world. However, he is also inclined to feel guilty over becoming angry or, at his best, fiercely displeased; anger is, after all, a “bad” emotion, and Snake sincerely strives to make up for his own flaws by wholly attempting everything in his power to be “good”. To achieve this, he vigorously represses any negative emotions such as anger and sorrow from consciousness, keeping a perpetually calm front. It’s only when his impatience begins to show through occasional fits of judgmental criticality and annoyance that the carefully crafted stoicism begins to crack and, having no healthy outlet to express his frustration, he distances himself even further from others.
Socially, he is more than a little awkward. For all his intelligence, he can be surprisingly dense and slow on the uptake, and he can be naïve. Leading a reclusive life away from society during the years he spent in isolation has made him more than a little inept when it comes to dealing with others in addition to the deep sense of loneliness he has developed over time. Trusting people takes a certain effort on his part, but once he gets to know you well enough (or at least to the extent where he grows fond of your company), he’ll become fiercely loyal and protective to you and your well-being.
At his best, Snake is a very quirky and good natured man. He has a penchant for cigarettes and cardboard boxes (the latter bordering on the downright bizarre), and he is very fond of dogs given his past profession as a musher. Though he knows full well that it will never be the case, he would rather be remembered for this than as a soldier of fortune.
Abilities: Snake possesses no otherworldly or magical superpowers, though he is very physically adept with athlete level strength and speed. Having previously served with the Green Berets in his youth as well as FOXHOUND, he has his training to fall back on, and is proficient with a wide variety of firearms from handguns to C4 to Nakita missiles. He also boasts an IQ of 180 and is fluent in six different languages. In addition, he is versed in a form of unarmed combat called CQC (Close Quarters Combat), having been personally trained by Big Boss himself. However, he does not employ its use for personal reasons.
Though it isn’t an ability per se, Snake is also mildly sensitive to supernatural phenomena, occasionally able to see and sense the presence of strong spirits.
Weaknesses: As stated before, he’s socially inapt and can be pretty oblivious. His naivety has been used against him many times, and even after the countless instances of betrayal from superiors and allies alike, he’s still willing to put himself out there to trust others and simply take their word for it. Due to his emotional repression, he also has the unhealthy habit of bottling every hint of anger and sorrow up until he reaches the breaking point. Even when given the option of confiding his problems to his closest friends, he would much rather suffer in silence than share his burdens with anyone else. He has also been diagnosed with PTSD and is a recovering alcoholic.
As intended in his artificial creation, his Klotho gene is mutated. That is, he is unable to reproduce and his lifespan is drastically shortened. He ages at an accelerated rate to the extent where, in a few years, it will become fatal if the FOXDIE virus doesn’t kill him first. That aside, he is still human and can be injured and killed by all the normal means.
History: Born ‘David’ in 1972, a product of the Las Enfants Terribles project designed to create genetically engineered clones of the century’s greatest soldier, Big Boss. One of three successfully cloned children, he was quickly taken from his surrogate mother following the completion of the project and raised in the United States by a number of varying men and women specializing in a vast variety of different professions. He quietly drifted from guardian to guardian, all the while completely unknowing and oblivious to the nature regarding his ‘birth’.
Most of his preteen years were spent in a private military school, which he left at the age of 19 to join the SOF. He participated in the Gulf War, infiltrating western Iraq with a squadron of Green Berets, before his induction in the elite black ops unit FOXHOUND, to which Big Boss himself commanded. It was here where he was personally trained by the legendary soldier and was given the codename ‘Solid Snake’. His first mission for FOXHOUND would come in ‘95 in which he would be tasked in infiltrating the South African military nation Outer Heaven led by a legendary mercenary. Tasked with rescuing fellow agent Gray Fox who had been captured by the enemy, he made his way through the fortress, skillfully overcoming the traps and guards he encountered resistance from until he finally found Gray Fox who informed him of a bi-pedal, nuclear warhead equipped battle tank codenamed ‘Metal Gear’ and the power it could give Outer Heaven should its leader decide to use it. He then proceeded onwards, dispatching several of Outer Heaven’s most skilled mercenaries, and was able to find and destroy Metal Gear, discovering shortly after the truth behind Outer Heaven and its mysterious and feared leader.
As it turned out, Big Boss was behind the operation the whole time, having created the nation to give soldiers who were shunned and used by politicians a home and, likewise, creating a world thriving on eternal warfare. He had chosen Snake specifically for the mission, indirectly sabotaging the rookie’s efforts along the way and, as if to further demolish the young soldier’s resolve, Big Boss finally revealed the horrible truth that he was Snake’s father. The revelation shook Snake to his core, but nonetheless, he engaged his commander and father in a fierce duel in the lowest levels of Outer Heaven and defeated him, leaving the century’s greatest soldier for dead in a crumbling, ruined fortress. Immediately following the ‘success’ of this mission, a disillusioned and traumatized Snake retired from FOXHOUND, drifting in and out of the public eye before being scouted and recruited by the CIA where he spent six months as a sleeper agent. Quitting out of dissatisfaction for the organization, he then became a mercenary for hire.
Four years later, he was called out of retirement by FOXHOUND’s new commander, Colonel Roy Campbell, and ordered to penetrate the military nation Zanzibar Land to rescue the Czech biologist Dr. Kio Marv who had been captured following his creation of an oil refining microbe that could solve the world’s answer to the energy crisis. Along the way, he teamed up with an undercover CIA agent and once again met up with Gray Fox, but this time as an enemy who had defected to the enemy’s cause, and was piloting a new Metal Gear that had been created for Zanzibar Land. Snake was able to once again destroy the bi-pedal tank and engaged Fox in hand-to-hand combat, killing him. Shortly after his short-lived victory, he encountered yet another old face; Big Boss, as it turned out, survived the incident at Outer Heaven and was revealed to be the leader of Zanzibar Land. Snake confronted his father once again, and he did so with the use of an improvised flame thrower created with a lighter and a can of hairspray, killing the former FOXHOUND commander by incineration. Though Snake was not able to save Dr. Marv, he recovered the doctor’s oil refining formula and managed to escape Zanzibar Land with it, delivering it safely to Campbell. The success of both Outer Heaven and now Zanzibar Land awarded Snake a great amount of prestige, and though he was given great commendation as a hero, he once again retired from FOXHOUND, disappearing into the Alaskan wilderness where he would take up drinking to relieve the trauma of his past coupled the shock that he had willingly committed the act of patricide twice.
Snake would live in this personal hell for six years until, in 2005, he was once again summoned to deal with a new threat transpiring on a small nuclear disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska's Fox Archipelago. Entrusted with infiltrating the facility to rescue the two hostages (DARPA chief Donald Anderson and the President of ArmsTech, Kenneth Baker) and to eliminate the members of FOXHOUND who were now threatening a nuclear launch, Snake fought his way through the base, dealing with his old unit, the various betrayals from his own support unit and the enigmatic leader of the terrorists along the way. The leader in question---Liquid Snake---was discovered to be Snake’s identical twin brother, and it was he who divulged the information regarding the Les Enfants Terribles project to Snake. Following a series of battles between the two, Liquid was finally killed from exposure to FOXDIE: an engineered virus designed to kill specific people by identifying their DNA. The virus had been injected into Snake prior to his arrival on the island, and it had been edited so that it would eventually randomly target Snake’s genetic makeup and kill him as well, but there was no specific way to tell when that would exactly be. Nevertheless, he escaped Shadow Moses shortly after quelling the threat of a nuclear war with fellow survivor Meryl Silverburgh and, filled with a new resolve, decided to pursue a new life.
Along with another survivor of the Shadow Moses incident, Dr. Hal ‘Otacon’ Emmerich, and a former member of his support team, Nastasha Romanenko, Snake went on to join the anti-Metal Gear organization known as Philanthropy where he would spend the next two years gathering information and putting a stop to the production of new Metal Gears.
In 2007, the group received an anonymous tip that a new model of Metal Gear (codenamed RAY) was being developed by the US Marine Corps., and was currently in the midst of transport aboard a tanker in the middle of the Hudson River. The whole affair was a setup, however; RAY was stolen and the tanker was sunk shortly after with Snake still on deck. Though he was fortunately rescued by Otacon on the Manhattan shore, Snake’s reputation was severely tarnished as he and Philanthropy were entirely blamed for the incident.
Going into hiding, Snake would not appear until 2009 where, disguised as a Navy Seal, he would infiltrate an off-shore cleanup facility in Manhattan. It was here where he would meet the young rookie codenamed Raiden and discover the existence of a third clone of Big Boss, Solidus Snake. Most importantly, Snake would learn of a mysterious group known as ‘The Patriots’ whose subtle manipulation held control over not only the United States, but also the world. With this in mind, he and Otacon set out to find and stop them.
