This should be an excitingly bizarre day, Hasi decides. The Chap Olympiad is a day-long event beginning at 12 PM and ending at 11 (usually, Hasi suspects, with myriad get-togethers afterward, and she has every intention of going to at least three), in the Bedford Square Gardens. Events include the 'Three Trousered Limbo', 'Umbrella Jousting,' 'Cucumber Sandwich Discus,' and 'Pipe Smoker's Relay', with the prize being a gold cravat - there's also silver and bronze. The beginning event is the Hop, Skip, and G&T, in which contestants jump into a sandpit with a gin and tonic filled to the top. The liquid left in their glass will be measured, and points will be deducted for spillages.
Hasi, in her red dress and fascinator, is waiting patiently for the 'Bounders' competition, in which she is one of the selected rows of ladies (which she found entertaining) toward whom contestants will behave like complete cads, and whomever receives the loudest slap wins. Since Hasi is extremely good at slapping, if usually in another context, she's pretty confident that she'll do whoever approaches her a good turn. In the meantime, she watches the proceedings, laughing quietly to a new acquaintance.
This is the most ridiculous - and satirical, which means it has actual self-awareness, unlike other recent parties - event that she's been to since...ever, probably, but she completely loves it. And she gets to be everyone's token American, which means she is subjected to some ribbing but nevertheless suffices as a pretty novelty.
