ooHHhhh! Its LOVELY! and your reasoning about the needs of a working woman/mother seems spot-on. Nothing like real life to be the best teacher when it comes to creating something practical (and pretty!)

Thanks so much! It's been a lot of fun to work on. With all the paying commissions I'm doing, this is my "just for me" project!

I should add that I'm making some other changes too - the skirt will be shorter (and I'm going to try hiking it up into a belt as well), and the apron will be functional (this one was a last minute addition). The hood/cap also needs work, more in the next post!

I've read some discussion on the front closure of this type of gown and there didn't seem to be any consensus on what the opening looks like under the apron. Since you say just lacing looser allows for pregnancy, I assume you lace the opening in the skirt part of the gown. Can you elaborate more on the opening?

Actually the skirt front is completely open - like the shinrone gown. I use small rings (about 3-4 of them) along the inside of each front side of the bodice, then it opens into a V in the skirt, which you can't see with the apron on. With the extant shinrone to go off of, and my "keep it simple" mantra, it seems the most reasonable explanation. You could, of course, just extend the bodice lacing down into the skirt without any difficulty.

So the idea is that since the dress is worn with an apron, there is no need to extend the lacing or have a closure for the opening in the skirt?

I've been looking at some 1490ish German clothing and I've seen some images where the lacing clearly extends into the skirt. But it is also cut in one piece with the bodice.

Yep, you could easily extend the lacing, although it's kind of unnecessary, imho! I can very easily slide the dress on over my head, and the V gap is quite small. I could wear it without the apron and it'd look just fine too! As soon as I finish the rings on my new incarnation I'll put it on and post a pic that shows this!
