god that sounds like one huge mess. (sorry i have a tendency to state the obvious) anyway, you should call and just explain that you had no idea about the message because you did not leave it... and that it was just one big miscommunication between you two- and your friend thought she was helping. and if he doesn't answer just do it on the machine. i don't blame him for being equally as frustrated though either. anyway let us know what happens!
