Holiday Perspective

So, I was going to make a lovely post about how amazing going home was and my fun trip around Burlington with Matt and just general blah... But I'm going to keep it brief and get to the main reason I'm really writing this entry. Going home was wonderful. I loved seeing my aunt, I loved seeing my uncle, my dog, my cat, my mom, my family at the reunion, then staying with my sister. I loved driving out to Burlington in the snow with Matt's best friend to wait for him and wandering around for the day, then coming home and going out to grab chinese with friends before trudging to work.

I mentioned going down to Littleton today to Matt and he decided to look for a gift for his older brother and his kids (since we're seeing them tomorrow for Christmas). Curt tagged along. We were heading down the highway and it was dark... it was only 6/7 or something, but it was foggy-ish and it was that creepy dark fog. We saw what looked like a car accident ahead of us. I thought it looked like two cars had a head-on collision, but as we got closer, we saw a Jeep had rolled and someone was dragging a guy out of the road. Matt had pulled over and I remember him pulling over, but not him getting out of the car or running to them. I got out of the car and ran over while calling the police/ambulance. We had to flag traffic by until help came, then Matt helped them out and even helped put the guy in the ambulance. His Jeep was sideways, the wheel was bend in... the Jeep had a canvas top and, when it rolled, the backseat flew out, as well as the driver. His stuff was all over the road. I was creeped that the lights were still on.

He was very, very lucky. We think he had a concussion, but not a severe one. I don't believe he broke anything and he seemed to still have his memory. He was talking when they took him in.

The part that got to me was when I had to walk by the Jeep to get to where Curt moved our car (the police asked him to move it down). I walked by the Jeep and it was making a weird noise, so I looked over at it... seeing it on its side with its lights on was creepy, but seeing the windshield wipers going over smashed in glass was traumatizing. I don't ever want to hear that sound again. Despite all the other stuff, I almost threw up because of that.

And it really put everything into perspective, as it had when I went shopping with my sister and we put the items back she was going to buy for my niece and nephew once people started shoving each other in the damn line. Christmas is about being with the people you love. Don't get me wrong, I -love- buying other people presents, more then I like receiving them myself, but when tomorrow (today) comes and I don't have anything to open - I'm still happy. I was able to spend the weekend with my family and now Matt's home. I've sorted out who my real friends are and I'm keeping in touch with them. Despite little stuff, I have a great life and I'm really grateful. And I wouldn't trade my friends and family for an entire forest of colorful trees and brightly wrapped boxes.

So, I hope everyone gets to be with the people they love and who love them on Christmas. That really is the best "gift" of all. :3

Merry Christmas, everyone.
