He brought along his book, just to listen to other people's reactions and get hints about what's going on. It doesn't sound like anyone's getting hurt, just really confused. [And it probably would've be a nice shot, if the big bad hadn't shouted right before attacking. Still, it takes Link completely off guard even as he's rolling off to the side. He's looking back at... Ganondorf, apparently, who just appeared out of no where.
