I think I will share a happy memory with everyone.
One of my favorite Video Game series is Harvest Moon. I have a story as to why I am so attached to this unique little game.
I was going through some hard times when I was younger - well my mother in an attempt to cheer me up let me rent a game every week if I was a good boy. The place I rented stuff from wasn’t that great and I couldn’t find a good game. I’d have fun for a little while and get bored quickly. To many actions games, shooter, and crap like that. Crap is harsh though, I mean I’m just not a big fan of the genre. Still I digress-
One day I was stuck between Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (It was a Harvest Moon game for the original Playstation for those less informed or those who are just to lazy to look it up) and this other game I can‘t remember the name of that looked dreadful. So I picked Harvest Moon - I figured whatever the art looks kinda cute.
I took to that game faster than our new cat took to biting things! I became invested in my farm as if it was real, loved the animals, pretended my character had his own personality, got a real crush on Karen (one of the girls you can marry), and came to care about the villagers (Cliff was my characters best friend). Heck I even had a few dreams about it. All very innocent though, I mean I was a kid and all.
Well I played it everyday. I loved that game - re-rented it over and over! Note: I didn’t use any guides or anything either - I played this game trying my best to find what I could on my own!
Anyway we take a trip to Maine to visit our father every year and of course I wanted to take it, but since it was a rental that was a no-no. I begged my mother to try and find the game - she said she would do her best.
Well at Maine I had fun, but in the back of my head I continued to hope that mom would find the game. I mean I was a kid and had screwy priorities so of course the game was all I could think of!
Every time I’d talk to my mom on the phone she’d be “Haven’t found it yet, sorry.”
Finally we are heading home and we stop somewhere to rest on our way. Call my mom - still no game (what did you expect a miracle happy ending?) she couldn’t find it anywhere.
I got home and asked her again, just incase she found it…nope…
I go to my room crying (See! Screwed up priorities!)… well I did thank her for trying - I mean I’m not a jerk! Anyway I own a lot of Harvest Moon games, but Back To Nature
Well I got that when I walked into my bed room and found it on my bed - She found it and surprised me with it! I ran out of the room and hugged her so tight… And that is the story of my first Harvest Moon Game… and why it is one of my favorite video game series. Thank you for listening to my kinda pathetic, but very sweet story…
