It is! You might like it, though. And it might work for a mature high schooler. A lot of it is set in Berkeley (one of the main characters is a grad student there) and it talks a lot about all kinds of Jewish culture, especially the Bialystoker sect.
I'm really enjoying it, although (and this is a spoiler) there is surprise!Septemeber 11th fallout in it, if that's an issue.
I just looked at the author's name again, and I've read at least one book by her. I don't remember if I liked it or not. If I didn't, it probably had to do with her take on Orthodox Judaism. But I'll give this a try. I saw there are 76 holds on 48 copies! Maybe I'll get it in time for the Jewish Holidays though...
